My husband and I had a rough few months last spring/early summer, so back in July we finally managed to find one night to drop our toddler off so we could get one night of peaceful, relaxing sleep. Someone suggested we go to Corning, which was a perfect little creative town for us to enjoy. I found the Staybridge through TripAdvisor and we stayed there. We liked the size of the room we stayed in, and the breakfast area (especially the always available coffee/tea/hot cocoa was much appreciated). The grounds were cute (it was too rainy to enjoy any of the small outdoor area) and the basketball hoop was just that, one hoop with a small half-court area to dribble around it.
However, since we live on the West Coast and have all our parents in NY, the only thing in the the world we wanted was one night free on my birthday to sleep in. I didn't sleep particularly well through the night, and you can imagine our dismay when we were awoken in the morning by a fire alarm. Someone had burned food and opened the door to the hallways, where smoke set off the fire alarms for the entire hotel. When we walked down our staircase, we noticed that there was some old drop blood that apparently had dripped down throughout the staircase, which kinda grossed me out, so it was not a fun way to start our one morning to sleep in.
I realize the fire alarm is not the hotel's fault. I'm happy there was no actual fire and everyone was okay. However, nobody who worked there seemed particularly sympathetic to the fact that the only night for the foreseeable future that we had free to get get glorious, uninterrupted sleep was ruined (not to mention, I feel like at other hotels, we'd have gotten a comp something - night, movie, credit, I don't know. Anything really. They let us check out later but that's something you can get at any hotel anyway.) When you have limited time to get away, and you specifically shell out extra money to stay at a location like this over another, you hope to find a place that makes you feel happy and welcomed, and would make you feel like the money you spent was well worth it. I've been to hotels or motels that have had less space than this that made me feel so happy to be there, and I would come back to those in a heartbeat. I'm not sure about this one - it was really pricey for what we got.
It's an OK, decent place. I just happened to have had a very disappointing experience. I know that if I want to make sure I get sleep, I would probably find somewhere else next time (I'm sure we'll return to Corning at some point in our lifetimes, when we're back in NY and our child is older). If I want to just be close to the Glass Museum, this would be fine.
