“Homey, WELL KEPT UP, Delicious Breakfast, CLOSE to Cooperstown - So cool to stay in one of the oldest homes in town!”
This was our first visit ever to a Bed and Breakfast. Jim and Charlene, the owners of the 1805 Phinney House made us fans! Spotless and clean, beautifully decorated, SAFE neighborhood and we walked everywhere. Such a lovely place on the third base foul line behind Doubleday Field. (The end of the backyard is the wall to the field.) It think the House is about two blocks from the main street of Cooperstown.
Jim and Charlene encourage rest and relaxation. They just want you to be able to "put your feet up" and relax and treat their home as your home. Jim is very personable and extremely knowledgeable about the Phinney house, the Phinney and Cooper families and Cooperstown itself. He loves to talk about the history and he makes it so interesting. You can tell Jim loves his 1805 Phinney House and loves Cooperstown. The breakfast is absolutely delicious. Jim is dedicated to quality for sure. He is there to give suggestions about where to go in Cooperstown. His family seems really, really nice too.
We stayed in the Elihu Phinney room. VERY cozy, and extremely clean. The bed was comfortable - we enjoyed our stay very much. It is sooooo cool to stay in such an old house and to think of the people who used to live there. Jim has kept a lot of the original hardware - for example - the door handles are original. To see the quality of the structure - no wonder the home is still standing since 1805!
While we were there it was way off season, so we were the only couple to stay in their B+B. Most of the rooms were closed off, so we weren't able to see them (I am sure they are all beautiful too). The The Roby Mae Room was open and that was gorgeous. You can't go wrong in either room.
There are no TV's in the room (they do have a living room where you are welcome to sit, relax, and watch.) We found this to be absolutely no problem. It is kind of nice to "get away" and relax at night - instead of watching television - to read a good book. Bring one with you. It adds to the ambiance of the visit.
Unfortunately our trip was for only one night. We will definitely be back to stay again for a longer period of time and we can enjoy the home much more. There is tea (and I hear - delicious home baked cookies) in the afternoon. One thing we found - and it is a sign of an excellent place, visitors there, many of them, are repeat visitors. They come back year after year. We know this because in each room is a book to write why you are there, where you are from and any other comments/info you would add. That makes for very interesting reading also.
There is only one major problem we found while there - Jim is a Red Sox fan - hahahaha. (Go Yankees!)
