“Great Taos location, but some downsides”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Great location near art studios and other shopping; 20 minutes from Ski Valley. Comfortable rooms (should have been at better rate), in-room fireplace was nice. Very, very large tub. Very comfy bed. Terrific indoor pool--unlike any others I've seen. Pool table once owned by Minnesota Fats is worth seeing. Then there were the downsides: served sour milk with Sunday morning cereal. Server did deduct it from my tab. Looked at my napkin and it had numerous stains. So I pulled one off the table behind me and that napkin also had multiple stains. They looked like they had been used to check the oil in the car. Blueberry muffin (made on site I was told) tasted like they used cake batter to make it. So an otherwise great stay marred by a very unfortunate last day breakfast experience. Also would have expected lower rate for average room since this was off-season.

“When Things Go Wrong...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

If you are traveling in winter and want to count on heat in your room, or shampoo in the bathroom, I would suggest staying somewhere else.

We stayed four nights at a significantly discounted rate that my wife found. Things at the beginning weren't too bad. The room was cold, but the porter assured us he had turned the heat on. When we could not find shampoo, we called and they eventually brought us some. The decorating is over-the-top "Corporate Southwest," but I am sure that some like it. By the middle of the night (It's January, right?) we realize the heat is not on, after hours of fitful sleep. I get it turned on and we are comfy.
The second night the heat works. However, when I try to use the gas fireplace, it turns out to be on a timer with a loud clicker built in, like on some bathroom fans - not exactly great for romance.
When I try to order room service, I learn that the phone is not programmed right. Eventually I learn that you can find the front desk by dialing housekeeping, the valet by calling the front desk, etc.. They replace the phone and fix the problem. Did I mention that it takes over five minutes to get hot water in the taps?

Minor irritations so far. Late in the night on the third night we realize that the heat has stopped working whatsoever - it has just been blowing cold air for hours. We get up bundled in blankets and call the front desk. They assure us that the maintenance guys will be right out. We wait for nearly an hour before calling again. Eventually they show up. They tell us that they will need to service the heat pump. Apparently their hard water causes them to need to be serviced regularly, but they don't keep up with it. The guy says "I don't think we have ever serviced the unit in this room!" We are told to come back hours later, only to find out that it is not fixable and we have to move to another room.

The next room is nice and the hotel brings us wine and cheese to cheer us up, which we appreciate (they gave us a small discount too). No shampoo again, and it still takes forever to get hot water, no remote for the TV, and our requests for shampoo and a remote are totally ignored, but we are toughened up now! (We learned from the maintenance guys that the circulation pump has been broken for weeks, something the front desk remains blissfully unaware of.)

To their credit, the staff is polite and well-intended, if not always competent. The hot tub and swimming pool are fabulous. But with the current management and lack of maintenance I would not count on this place to keep you warm and happy.

“LOVE this hotel from head to toe!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

This hotel knocks it out of the park. It is simply stunning. I was amazed at our room- we were in the Quanah Parker suite (WOW) I didn't want to leave! We enjoyed a nice dinner in the hotel as well. The "flirtini" is an awesome drink on the menu, at the hotel bar, should you require a yummy for your tummy! We were there for a quick romantic/ski getaway. It was perfect. We visit Taos very often, as it is one our favorite places, and we usually rent a house with our 3 children. This was very romantic place for the two of us to escape. It was one positive experience after another. I did not get to check out the spa but I hear it is fabulous. If you are skiing Taos the only downside is the drive to Taos Ski Valley. It's about 35 min to the Valley so we usually like to stay closer to the Arroyo Seco area or in the Valley. If you are looking for romance, peace and harmony this is the place. I'm excited to stay here again in the future- it is one of the best hotels I've stayed and it's worth every penny!

“Top notch in every respect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

I don’t give 5 ratings easily. If there is a hotel that gets a 5+ it is this one. We visited in January 23-25, 2012 and found hotel to be top notch in every respect. We were too tired from skiing at nearby Taos Ski Valley and ate dinner and breakfast every day at the hotel. Breakfast was consistently excellent (loved those blue corn pancakes!). Dinner was uneven but the elk, salad and soups were terrific. The pool and hot tub were in perfect working order. (if you forget your swimming suit, relax; they have a pretty good selection for sale.) The hotel maintains indoors a veritable tropical garden. How they do it is a mystery but we were told there is a genial horticulturist in charge of it. The staff was invariably friendly. There is art though the property and terrific music playing constantly.

“Wonderful Resort, Fabulous Spa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Overall, we enjoyed a terrific stay at this resort. We traveled with two young kids, and while the staff does not specifically cater to children, ours loved the unique breakfast restaurant (trees, aquarium, waterfall), the beautifully designed indoor pool area, and the grounds. I would also recommend exploring the second floor above the entrance; we had fun playing pool in the library and viewing the artwork.

We had reserved a casita, but when I called ahead to request a room, guest services talked me into a double queen taos mountain room to have more space. I can't speak to the casitas, but the Taos mountain rooms are very spacious. The large tub makes bathtime for the kids much easier.

I would also recommend the restaurant (we had three breakfasts and two dinners at the hotel). The prices are what you would expect, the portions are generous, the food is fresh, and the service is good relative to other restaurants in Taos.

Others have complained of the valet parking here, and I sympathize that I generally avoid valets like the plague. But after seeing the operation, 1) I completely understand and agree with why the hotel uses this system, 2) I was impressed with most of the valets, and 3) we enjoyed having a nice warm car waiting for us when we called ahead to have it brought around.

Finally, I would highly recommend a visit to the spa. After visiting so many 4-star chains and 5-star hotels that upcharge for use of the spa, it was wonderful to enjoy unlimited, complimentary use of the spa, especially when the facility is so nice. The website warned the steamrooms were broken, but the spa does have a working steamroom guests can reserve.
