“perfect place for a soulful, quiet experience....not luxury!”

i was at the property for a workshop -- and it's situated very close to town which is great! literally a 5 minute walk, through a park, to the square. it has a gorgeous, desert-like feeling with all adobe buildings. i was in a house that is not in the main building, and while it was adequate, it was not "hotel-like" by any means. so, just so you know what you're getting into -- the maid service for my 8-day stay, included one sheet change, and the garbage being dumped each day. we had a small kitchen in the house, and even the tea cups were not washed. there was a vacuum but it was never used. the counters were not dusted, nor were the bed side tables, etc. so there really isn't maid service, which, for me, was awful. the food was good, but they were a bit snotty, really about allergies. i have a severe nut allergy, and i offered to eat very plainly, but it seemed to be a bit of a hassle for her to tell me what i could and could not eat that particular meal. oh well -- i loved the workshop i did, and the facilities for that were perfect. it was quiet (a few dogs, but that's ok) and serene. loved the labryinth, and the main building has a great sitting room. sure, the front desk people aren't exactly warm, but there fine for taking your money and giving you information. if you're looking for a luxury B and B, casa de las chimineas (sp?) is gorgeous, and i highly recommend it for a well- appointed room and gourmet meals.

“Lovely Retreat-Style Oasis with Bountiful Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

Mabel Dodge Luhan House is a retreat center that functions as a bed and breakfast when there are no workshops in session. I have stayed here many times over the last eleven years for writing workshops. Rooms are simple (no television, no phone) but comfortable and pretty. I like to stay in the guest house where the plumbing is more modern, but there are some lovely rooms in the main house, including Ansel Adams, Mabel's grand bedroom, and Tony's room with a private outdoor porch. The cooks serve up a sumptuous full breakfast in the morning: eggs, oatmeal, pastries, fresh fruit in season, specialty dishes like blue corn pancakes or migas (eggs with tortillas, sort of like scrambled eggs crossed with nachos). Staff are friendly and helpful. You will be carrying your own luggage up stairs and over flagstones and you will want to watch your head on some narrow and low doorways.

Room Tip: Best plumbing is in the guest house. The largest and smallest rooms are in the main house.

“Peaceful and charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

The Mabel Dodge Luhan House is a gem for those who appreciate interesting architecture, attention to detail, and an environment conducive to conversation, meditation, and quiet past times--not the place for those who need to be entertained. On our part, we didn't miss having a television in our rooms--we enjoyed pre-breakfast walks and a late-night scrabble game (note that there are abundant books and games in various sitting areas in the main part of the building). Breakfasts were fresh and delicious, with lots of choices to suit different appetites. We'd recommend without reservation.

“Can't wait to come back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

The other reviews are right in that this is a quirky and VERY SPECIAL place. There are no televisions anywhere and the internet service is limited to the living area of the main house. This house is almost 100 years old and has so much history. If you are in the mood for this space, it is a wonderful and amazing place to visit. Breakfast is to die for. The beds are not the best ever, the bathrooms are not luxurious, there is no air conditioning. If you are looking for a chain hotel with all the standard amenities, then please keep looking. If you are looking for quirky, different, historic, and memorable, this is the place for you!

“Be Sure You Know What You're Getting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

If you're into the early history of Taos and its artists and book a room here because it's Mabel Dodge Luhan's home, you'll get a great deal of atmosphere. Just be aware that for the most part these rooms are tiny and spartan -- no air conditioning and the rooms can get quite stuffy even with windows open; curtains are pretty cotton lace but don't cover the entire window so, since some windows face east, you are up with the sunrise; our twin beds were old (not historic, just old) and very creaky; there's no television anywhere. However, it's living history, our bathroom had a large walk-in shower and the breakfast was huge and outstanding. So just "know before you go".
