“What a surprise!”

We were driving through New Mexico on our way home, back to the Midwest. It was lunch time and we saw the sign for "Springer" and thought we'd look for a restaurant. One of the first places we saw was The Brown Hotel and Cafe, and there it was, the "open" sign glowing.

We had lunch in this wonderful little spot. The locals must have been coming in for lunch and there were some cute older couples, dressed in their Sunday best. Service was efficient and the food was very good.

The ladies rest room had a bath tub in it so I'm assuming it must have been a shared bathroom at one time. Very quaint.

A pleasant surprise, for sure!

“Quaint Hotel in a Quiet New Mexico Town”

Nice old hotel, built to accomodate rail passengers many years ago. I think built in 2 stage in the 1920 or 30's. Very resonable rates that include tax and breakfast. Good breakfast. Rooms are furnished with vintage and antique furniture. I think we will stay here a couple of nights next year while visiting Taos. Not a bad drive to Santa Fe, Taos, or Raton from here. Has downstairs sitting room, lobby and has very nice sitting room upstairs.

“Unique and Friendly, Slightly Off the Beaten Path”

We ate breakfast here on a previous stop in town and checked out the rooms. We decided right then to stay overnight here on our next trip, and we're not sorry we did. It's an old hotel and the rooms near the front all share one bathroom and shower. But we were the only guests in that part of the hotel so it was quiet and convenient; not sure how it would be when every room is full, which happens during hunting season.

The rooms on the street can be a little noisy, and the manager was happy to let us move to a quieter side room. Two comfy beds, very homey, and if you skip out on the free breakfast you're missing half the reason to stay at the Brown. Get the french toast! We will definitely stay here again on our next trip through northeastern New Mexico.

Room Tip: Avoid hunting season and ask if you can see the available rooms during check-in.

“Great Bed & Breakfast”

What a great hotel and cafe. I traveled there with my Venturing Crew on the way to Philmont. There were 23 of us and we took up every room at the hotel. The staff was great. We pulled in just in time for dinner. All of the youth and adults loved the food. They have a pretty big menu selection. Breakfast was great. We got whatever we wanted off of the menu and it was included in the room price. The service was excellent and the staff was very friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone.

“A great old cowboy hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2009

This is a great old cowboy hotel. Before you go you should be aware that the bathrooms are "down the hall". That said I must say that it is one of most quaint and cool places to stay that I have ever visited. I expected to pass John Wayne in the hall at any time. (I have seen Wilfred Brimley eating breakfast there on two occasions). The rooms are kind of small but they are very clean and comfortable. The owner is almost always at the desk and he and the employees are friendly and always ready to helpout.
One of the best things about this place is the breakfast that is included with the room. Let me tell you! This ain't no "continental" breakfast. you get anything on the menu and there is lots of it. Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast Burrito,(Green or Red chili sauce), biscuits, toast, bacon, sausage, waffels, pancakes, cereal, toast, eggs just about any way you like them, and milk, coffee, tea.
Now don't expect the Ritz. The floors creek and the stairwell is narrow but the experience is great. Enjoy. (if you are going during the hunting season you better get reservations because the place fills up with hunters)
