“Run down lodge”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

The lodge is old and run down. It is in a very poor condition. The net screens at the doors are full of holes and tattered. Also large holes and in screens at windows. Same in all rooms.
The coating on the taps in the bathrooms are off and appears old and cheap quality. The shower and drains are blocked and dams in the shower. There are frogs in the baths and rats on the roof rafters (one room also had bats in the ceiling).
The tiles are unpolished and looks as if a previous coating layer was badly removed.
The main deck needs replacement and is in very bad condition. The pool is in a bad state and water murky and surface coarse and worn out.
The deck chair covers are torn and tattered and the furniture old and dirty.
The roofs thatching is old and looks weathered.
There is a sewerage smell all over.
The lodge is in dire neede of renovations.
The vehicles are equally bad. The one vehicle broke down twice (overheated). The other vehicle is not even a proper gamedrive vehicle, but a underpowered Nissam bakkie.

Room Tip: Avoid this lodge until they renovate it completely.

“Great place and good gamedrives”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

We stayed here for four nights at the end of August. The room was fantastic with a big and comfy bed, veranda overlooking a dry riverbed, huge bathroom with outdoorshower and bathtub.

The park is huge so it's not like being in a zoo where you are guaranteed to se all the animals. But the game drives were very good thanks to our guide Fani, and tracker Kenny. We saw a few animals that I've never seen before as bushbaby and genet, which was very fun. We also saw lots of lions, and of course all other kinds of animals.

The lodge isn't fenced which we think is great. At night we heard lions roar close to the lodge, and we saw what they think was a leopard walking across our neighbour's veranda. A ranger takes you to and from your chalet at night so you feel very safe. In the daytime our chalet were visited by monkeys and antelopes, so you feel like you're in the middle of the bush. Which of course, you are.

The food was also great, and we were served boma style braai, private dinner in the wine cellar, lunch overlooking the waterhole etc.

I've been to several other places like this, and I must say that this is among the best places I've been. And the staff is really to thank for that, as well as an amazing ambiance and of course the fantastic game drives.

“Great place and great food”

Very beautiful lodge and room, with an incredible XXL bathroom.
For us, it has the best cuisine we've ever tasted in all our previous "safari" Camps and Lodges, Excellent indeed.
Games quite short (for us, but probably most of the people loves to spend some time in the SPA), but
ve've got a very knowledgeable ranger.
We didn't see much wildlife, but obviously that's not their fault, nature is nature after all !

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

Before I comment on the lodge, I would like to say that my review is based purely on the hotel only and not on the game drives, as although the game drives were excellent and we were lucky enough to see all of the big 5 plus wild dogs and much more during our 5 night stay, it is unfair to judge the place on what we saw as it is on an unfenced game reserve, so there is no guarantee of seeing anything.
We stayed for 5 night immediately after the world cup final, and can not express enough how amazed we were by this place. We are a young couple, and this is by far the most expensive place we have ever stayed (it was around £600 a night, which very nearly put us off), but in hindsight, it absolutely made our holiday.
We were greeted by the manager, our tracker and driver, the chef and several other hotel staff, and taken to our lodge. The lodge was huge and immaculate. The double bed was huge and beautifully draped with mosquito netting. 2 sides of the room were glass, with a sitting area outside. On our arrival there was a herd of elephants right outside our room, and on our last 2 nights there was a small hippo eating just outside our outside shower. The bathroom was huge, with a double shower (leading to the outside shower), and a hot tub, again with big windows to watch the bush from.
Food was first class; 3 course meals twice a day of the highest standard, and a wide variety of choice catering for those who were willing to sample local delicacies such as ostrich and impala, or lamb, chicken and pork stews and more familiar dishes for those less adventurous.
On our final night, we were treated to dinner alone in the wine cellar, and on return to our room we discovered that the hotel staff (who went into the room twice a day; to make the bed in the morning, open curtains etc, and in the evening to prepare the bed for night by removing throws and setting the mosquito nets, and leaving a traditional african story on the pillow to read before sleep) had not only done as they normally do, but they had lit candles all over the lodge, and laid a patch of Rose petals leading to a bubbling jacuzzi with a bottle of champagne on ice.
The lodge itself was worth every penny that this part of our trip cost, but the service, food, and the luck we had on our drives has made those 5 days truely unforgettable and the new benchmark by which every other holiday will be measured.
