Not sure how they come up with the rankings, but there's no way that there are five lodges better than Gomo Gomo in this area. There might be five that are more expensive, but not beter.
We were met Johan (our guide) at the door and he was our check-in, information, and safari guide all in one. They have a great setting, with the waterhole in front of the pool deck. We had room #3, which is closest to the pool and on the waterhole. I would recommend asking specifically for this room. Sleeps four, but we were only two. Bed was comfortable, bathroom was large and equipped, and view was great. Food was very good, and no problems if you're vegetarian.
Johan is a great guide, as he is a perfect blend of knowledge/safety and balls-out action. We felt like we were on an amusement park ride at times...and that's a compliment. Like I said in my last review of Naledi, don't pick your lodge based on the animals seen by the previous travelers- pick instead based on the quality of staff/surroundings. In this area, I say that Gomo Gomo is the choice to make- as I can't see anything another lodge could give you besides a larger bill.
We asked Johan to find us cats (as we didn't see them at Naledi), and it took him about 10 minutes to find Lisa the Lion. Elephant action was great, as was turning around during our coffee break at the elephant bathing hole to find a hyena looking us over from a few truck-lengths away. We had a great time, and all in 24 hours.
"6th of 11 in the area"? Don't believe that for a second. Find out the truth for yourself.
