If you had a choice you probably would not go on safari in South Africa during the rainy season in January. The high grass gives maximum cover to the animals and the wet grounds means the vehicles cannot go off-road (one of the reasons for choosing the private reserves over Kruger Park). In our case, we were going on a cruise around Madagascar and decided to go on safari as a prelude to the cruise, so had no choice as to date.
We were scheduled to stay for three nights, so anticipated six safari rides. Two of those were wash-outs (raining, and very few animals in sight) and two were lost due to our having to leave a day early because of concerns that impending rains would make it impossible for us to get out of camp and make our cruise.
So far this sounds like a disaster - but it was not. In fact, we had a wonderful time on our too-brief stay at Sabi-Sabi Little Bush Camp for two reasons: (1) the two safari rides we did go on were spectacular, and (2) the Camp and its personnel and service were absolutely superb.
First the safari rides - morning and afternoon of one day. No, we did not see the "big five" but what we did see was memorable (see photos). In the morning, a lioness and her two 2-month old cubs suddenly materialized out of the long grass and obligingly sauntered down a road. The father lion also soon appeared. It turned out they were going to a kill the lioness had made the day before. In the afternoon, they lay in the long grass digesting a huge meal while the two cubs nursed continuously. An unforgetable experience!
Even without the wonderful safari experience, our stay at Sabi-Sabi Little Bush Camp would have been memorable. Just six beautifully-appointed suites so there is never a crowd here. We especially appreciated the spa on the deck to relax in after a bouncy safari ride. The food was excellent throughout our stay and the service outstanding. Hugo and Alta, the managers, did everything within their power to make our stay enjoyable, including (unfortunately) special arrangements to get us out of camp before forecasted high water would have made it impossible.
If you are looking for a place with a lot of night-time entertainment and activity, this is probably not it. But if you want quiet luxury in the bush, Sabi Sabi Little Bush Camp is the perfect place for your safari.
