I have stayed at this motel two or three times in the past. Given that it is one of two in Magdalena, it was OK. One time they messed up a reservation and had us down as arriving a day before we actually arrived. But this last time, management achieved new depths of flakiness.

I made a reservation for a two-night stay several days in advance. I arrived at 5:30 p.m.. NO ONE WAS THERE. I rang the bell, waited around--NOTHING.

I went to the other motel in town, the Western Motel, and was able to get a room. I telephoned the High Country Lodge and no one answered. Nor did they ever call back.

Socorro looked boring to me so I decided to spend the night here while visiting this part of NM. I like the older mom & pops.

I asked for a room with a firm bed, and the woman at the desk went through the extra trouble to check a few rooms for me. Great service! The bed was very comfortable and though the room was worn (crack in the tub, etc) it was clean. I live in an old house so I'm used to such things. In fact it was overly clean: there was so much air freshener or something that after a nap I awoke with a headache. About 2:30 in the morning I realized the reason for the air freshener was mildew. (Yes, mildew in the desert.)

I had planned to stay 2 nights but ended up heading to Mountainair the next day instead.

But maybe it was just that room, and maybe they'd just had a leaky pipe or something. This is a sweet little town. Be sure to scope out your dining options because there aren't many...I'm glad I bought some groceries. The library is fantastic, in an old RR station. I attended an evening program while I was there.

The owners are like friends, the food is phenominal and the scenery is spectacular! The rooms are neat, clean and very homey feeling and I highly recommend this place!

High Country Lodge is a basic motel. The rooms are small. the bathrooms are very small. Everything was clean. Reasonable value for money. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Fridge and microwave in room. AC/ heater are a bit noisy.
Included breakfast is basic. Cereal, tea and coffee. It would have been nice to be able to have had toast or english muffin as an option.
