Enjoyed a simple stay at this historic property. Nice to have a bar inside so if you want to watch a game and take a beer you don't have to worry about DUI...besides with the police department right around the corner .....you would likely get caught. Room had a nice 4 poster bed and some older furnishings and TV with only the standard fare..no Showtime or other movie channels but adequate. The hotel provides a hot breakfast with several selections but nothing super special but again adequate. It was nice to sit down and relax a few minutes but it doen't open till 7 a.m. so those hoping to get on the road early will have to wait a bit. The heating units worked well but the rooms were a bit on the low humidity side probably due to the old brick walls of the structure. Mattesses and pillows were pretty standard fare and would be one place to look to improve. A bennie for the hotel is being in the city proper close to walking distance of good coffee and salads at World Traveller Cafe on the Plaza. It's a less than 15 min walk at an amble pace to NM Highlands University where student events and movies could be checked for local entertainment. If you have a travelers backback luggage you could even walk from the Amtrak Station and check out some local eats at the El Fidel or Charlies Spic and Span. Too bad this town does not have a stop on a high speed rail line to Denver and Albuquerque it could give it the economic boost for a brighter future.
