We detoured a bit off our Route 66 trip in order to stay at The Plaza Hotel. The owners are to be congratulated and thanked for the wonderful job they did on restoring this lovely place. We know from past experience that staying in an old hotel can sometimes mean small, dark and dingy rooms and weird shaped "afterthought" bathrooms. What a pleasure it was to open our hotel room door and find a beautiful, high ceilinged room with light streaming in from large windows. The bathroom, while not huge, was sparkling clean and perfectly adequate. The free breakfast was served in the hotel's restaurant where you could order anything from the menu. There were two small negatives that probably should be mentioned although, in fairness, one problem is out of the hotel's control. The hotel sits right on the pretty, tree filled plaza. Apparently, one of the favorite pastimes of Las Vegas' younger crowd is to cruise the plaza endlessly. So, from about 4:00 pm to after 9:00 pm, if your room faces the plaza you are subjected to a non-stop parade of noisy trucks, rumbling motorcycles and cars with their radios blaring (we stayed at the hotel on a Friday night so this might be something that only happens on weekends). Thankfully, the parade stopped before 10:00 so we were able to get to sleep. The other issue was when we wanted to grab some lunch at a time when the restaurant was closed. We were directed to the bar across the lobby which serves a modified menu. Between the blasting rock music and the banks of televisions the noise level is pretty high. The bartender (who was a very nice guy) seemed to be a lot more comfortable serving drinks than food. At one point (happily it was after we had gotten our food) he pulled the bottom of his t-shirt up over his belly and blew his nose in it. We could only hope that he washed his hands before serving the next meal. Overall, though, The Plaza is a lovely hotel, a really good value, and definitely worth a stay.
