I must admit up front that it has been several years since we spent two idyllic nights enjoying the Ponderosa room at the lovely Elk Mountain Lodge. I am thrilled to read more recent reviews that echo my sentiments completely (except for the rude comments about Terry's beloved furbaby) Our entire experience could not have been more satisfying - from initial contact to our melancholic departure (we hated to leave).
Terry's warm reception made us feel like we were visiting an old friend and it just got better from there. The Ponderosa room was tastefully appointed, immaculately clean and over-the-top cozy, so much so that we were tempted to just stay in. After a brief rest, however,I was eager to get out and explore the surrounding beauty. We hiked along the river and scrambled to higher ground for better views of the breathtaking scenery. Eventually, as the sunlight dwindled we headed toward the Village of Jemez Springs to check out the historic Los Ojos Restaurant and Saloon to enjoy an adult beverage with a hearty meal. We didn't linger there for long though as our comfy room with the over-sized tub, candles and luxurious linens beckoned. The remainder of our evening was blissfully restful and we awakened early but invigorated; enthusiastic about the day ahead. Our plan was to visit Bandelier and to savor the sights in between. Breakfast with Terry was the ideal way to start our day. He shared helpful insights about the region while preparing our delicious meal in his stunning lodge. He again made us feel like we were in a loved ones' home.
The 35 mile drive to Bandelier takes you through dense forest and past vast meadows. Elk, as you might imagine, are abundant. I am saddened to report here that much of Bandelier National Monument remains closed after the devastating Las Concha fire and flash floods early in the summer of 2011. I am grateful we took the opportunity to explore so much of the historic site and ancient dwellings. After several hours trekking through Bandelier we decided that we'd be more than content to spend the rest of our brief stay relaxing in the peaceful splendor at the Lodge. It was the right decision.
