After spending 24 hours at a lovely wedding celebration in City of Rocks State Park, my wife and I were seriously looking forward to checking in, showering, and sleeping at the La Quinta in Deming. We were surprised and quite disappointed to find that there was no soap in our bathroom. No soap at the sink, and no soap in the shower area. Just one-full bottle of shampoo/conditioner, along with one half-empty bottle (and presumably used) bottle of the same.
We had to put dirty clothes back on to go ask the front desk for soap. At the front desk, we were informed that because some cleaning person didn't show up for work that day, the hotel had run out of soap. So the desk gave us more shampoo/conditioner. Later, I found a black hair on top of the toilet seat, which is consistent with what the front desk said about staffing that day. It might also explain why the public bathrooms in the hotel were locked; without the staff to clean and restock them, it wouldn't make sense to keep them open. But if the public bathrooms were locked, the private ones were kept open and rented out to folks such as us, even if they hadn't been cleaned or restocked.. Thankfully, another member of the wedding party staying in the hotel had a small bottle of soap that she had leftover from a previous hotel. She shared it with us and we tried to get clean.
The breakfast was more than I expected, as it included sausages, omelets (not the best in the world but we were grateful), and make-your-own waffles (although they were out of mix by the time we got there at 8am or so). The juice selection was good. The coffee was watery.
The location is a bit on the far end of town, but it is at least close to the highway.
I did not use the pool but it looked clean.
The front desk staff were courteous in what must have been a tough situation for them.
The bed was comfortable and the pillows were nice.
Overall, I think we had bad luck with this particular experience, and I suspect that the La Quinta in Deming is capable of better. Still, the lack of soap after a good 24 hours of camping is hard to overlook. I am jealous of a friend of mine who spent a lot less staying in a motel closer to the center of town. He had soap.
