“Customer Services Trumps Shortcomings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2010

This was my third trip to Clovis but the first during which I stayed at a hotel. I chose the Hampton based on satisfactory experiences with the chain, proximity to family we were visiting, and some decent reviews.

The stay wasn't perfect, but the staff's outstanding efforts exceeded the shortcomings encountered. Upon entering our room we discovered that the toilet did not flush; the chain was disconnected. The General Manager, on duty at the time, could not switch us to another room but promised to have the toilet fixed right away. We were away from the room for about four hours and returned to find the toilet fixed as promised. On the morning of checkout, I tried to print out boarding passes in the business center, only to discover that the printer was not working. The desk clerk let me print the boarding passes on the computer at the front desk.

The property itself was up to the usual Hampton Inn standards in terms of cleanliness and amentities in the room. The breakfast was very good - the 6-10 a.m. hours were appreciated. The breakfast had decent protein every day. Although the desk clerk covered the breakfast service, she did a great job keeping the breakfast stocked while handling the check out responsibilities. Housekeeping was courteous and effecient, a concern since housekeeping "mistakenly" missed our room during a stay at another chain several years ago.

The biggest plus is the pool. It is the cleanest pool I have ever encountered at a hotel. The water is crystal clear. On one of my swims, I met the person who does the pool maintenance. He spent about 45 minutes checking the water quality of the pool and whirlpool and adding chemicals as necessary. He told me that he checks the water twice a day.

As earlier reviews warned, the biggest problem is the railroad that runs along Mabry on the opposite side. The train traffic is constant, and the trains blow their horns crossing Norris Street. Although we had a room near the rear of the hotel, we could still hear the horns. As suggested by other reviews, leaving the fan on greatly reduced the noise. Also the front desk supplies ear plugs upon request.

Overall we were very satisfied by our stay. The management and staff does pay attention to detail and tries to make the guests comfortable.

“Great hotel, rude night manager”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2009

We were extremely impressed with the rooms. The bedding is amazing - you don't want to leave your room, you just want to stay in bed! The bathrooms are tastefully decorated as is the room. You wouldn't think you were in a hotel room - everything is very modern and clean.

We had an issue with the night manager. After calling the hotel and being assured that a roll-away bed was not a problem, we drove for 8.5 hours to Clovis. When we checked in, a very rude manager told us that they only had 3 roll-aways and they were already committed to a basketball team that was staying in the hotel. We reminded them that we HAD called that morning and were assured it wouldn't be a problem. We have a twin air mattress and we would have brought it if necessary. The guy was extremely rude and did not make any attempt to be helpful. When we left to find another hotel, he cancelled our reservation as soon as we walked out. When we realized we would probably lose our money since we hadn't cancelled the reservation, we found a WalMart, bought and air mattress and went back. The manager immediately came out even though another person was helping us and continued to be a jerk.

I would stay here again since the rate was very reasonable and the facility was first rate, but they need to do something about their staff.

As an aside, any hotel on Hwy. 84 is going to be right across the highway from the train tracks. The fan in the room covered the noise nicely, but if this is an issue, try finding a place on Prince Street, which runs away from the train. This street has TONS of restaurants and a WalMart.

Also, Clovis is very stinky. There are stockyards in that part of Texas so you cannot escape the smell. The inside of the hotel was fine, but as soon as you step outside, you will be hit with the stench.

Nice quiet place to sleep, good rate, then used AAA card and got an additional discount. Beds not too comfy, but clean, nice bathroom.

“Nice stop at Hampton Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2009

Stopped at this hotel while driving from Dallas to Albuquerque. We were very pleased by our spacious and nicely decorated room. The breakfast provided in the morning was a nice touch as well. Front desk staff was courteous.

The only downside was that the indoor pool and hot tub were closed which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5

“Nice People”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2008

If you're super-sensitive to night noise and don't like to use ear plugs this isn't the place for you. My husband had no problem sleeping without ear plugs. I don't sleep that well on the road so I'm used to using ear plugs - I'm glad they were provided in the room.
We stayed at a brand new Hampton in Crossville TN that had what I'd call 'Pottery Barn' decor. This Hampton had upgraded the furniture to the newer style, but not the bathroom which was just ok.
The breakfast was good, and the staff very nice.
I saw one reviewer suggested Leal's (there are 2 locations in town)...my sister has lived in Clovis for over 20 yrs and her other favorite is Juanito's.
