“Yep, not bad. Good music ...”

Yeah, I guess Thang Loi is okay. It isn't in the best location, although there is a wonderful beach about 5 minutes walk away. It just doesn't have a very "beachy" atmosphere. The owners are a pretty nice couple, but not particularly warm and bubbly - not that that is a huge issue. They have great taste in music, and I loved listening to Kaftwerk and The Bad Seeds on the beach in Vietnam. Overall this is a pretty nice remote place. One thing of note for Thang Loi - BEST FOOD IN PHU QUOC! Great work Sao - they should be paying you more (and giving you a day off!) Phu Quoc is okay, but if you are expecting beaches like Indonesia or Thailand you will be disappointed, and unfortunately the fishing industry has been so successful that the diving is pretty boring (although if you love nudibranch, they are huge here - all of their predators have been fished!) The best thing to do on Phu Quoc is hire a bike and go to the remote beaches. Thanks Reinhard for a pretty cool stay. The bar was great once the alcohol started flowing! PS. If you want to book a snorkelling trip (like we did) you will get shuffled onto a horrible boat tour where they encourage tourists to go fishing for undersized fish that then just die in a bucket without ever being eaten. Guys, don't book those trips for your guests, they are like a tourist production line and we hated it. We would've loved to have a private boat and would've paid 3 or 4 times the price for it, rather than being forced into a pearl farm and tourist trap.

“Basic accommodation in relaxed atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2011

Thang Loi is not a traditional hotel, and before you decide to stay here you should check both good and bad reviews as those all reflect some truth about this hotel.

Accommodation is basic and close to nature. Bungalows are pretty run down and provides only the bare essential: A bed with a mattress and a mosquito net. Only cold water available and electricity available only in the evening. Cleaning only done after request. Its not possible to close 100% the bungalow of from nature so bugs are coming and going. One evening we had a small snake inside the bungalow and we heard others who had similar experience, if that sounds like you worst nightmare then don't stay here. Hotel is also quite far out from the main town so if you want to go out for restaurant, night market or others you will need to take a taxi (or motorbike) downtown.

Most bungalows in the Thang Loi resort have a sea view through the forest, but the resort does not have a sand beach (its rocky). Going a few minutes north to Bo resort you get to to a very nice sand beach that you can use but you don't have access to deck chairs and sun umbrellas here. So if you want to stay on the beach with your kids its not perfect.

The restaurant here is quite good value with friendly and efficient staff (during Chinese new year they applied a 15% increase of all prices, making it less attractive). Food was fresh and tasty, but some of the portions were a bit disappointing. Restaurant runs from 7am to midnight so its quite convenient to eat at any time.

We found that its better to rely on your own arrangements for tours, taxis etc than going through the owners. They don't seem to be very concerned with whether the tour is the best and cheapest possible. Also little advice available to explain different possibilities.

Most of the guests here are German and speaking German would probably add to the experience of staying here. There was a lot of partying among the Germans and we got the feeling that bring different Germans together for a cozy evening was one of the main tasks of the owners.

For the right person this will be a great place, for others a nightmare. Overall our experience was positive and if we come back to the island we will consider to stay here.

“Best service best food best value”

I find it difficult to concisely summarize our stay at thang Loi. To keep it short and sweet I will say that the hosts could not have been more accommodating, the facilities could not have been more quaint and homey, and the food... Voila! We planned on staying for a week but ended up staying for 3. This place will suck you in so be sure to have plenty of vacation days saved up before going...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2011

The owner were more than friendly. They gave very helpful informations about the island and vietnam. The food was fantastic, the beach is great - you can relax the whole day. If you want to visit Phu Quoc, you have to stay here - won't find a better place!!!! We liked it so much, that we dicided to go back there.

“Picture Perfect Relaxation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2011

We stayed here for 4 nights and it was bliss. Ong Lang beach is far away from the madding crowds of the main town resorts and Thang Loi is an oasis of calm. The beach with its rickety wooden jetty is gorgeous, the staff friendly and helpful and our special beach bed was amazing. We took the snorkelling tour through the hotel and hired a bike to do the fantastic northern beaches and meet he locals... what a fantastic place... can't recommend Phu Quoc and Thang Loi enough.

Look out for the Phosperescent creatures if you have a swim after midnight... simply magical!
