We spent two weeks in Vietnam over the Thanksgiving 2011 holiday, with the first four nights at Cassia Cottage. We found the staff to be truly welcoming and eager to help with any question or request. While some have a limited knowledge of English, we found that those in direct contact with guests spoke and understood, but were really only having difficulty with our American accents!
We stayed in a beach house directly behind the main pool and it was very clean, and comfortable by Phu Quoc standards. My only disappointment was that the air conditioner does not run during the hottest part of the day, but since the only reason for staying there is the beach, it wasn't that important. The room had a great ceiling fan which was helpful. You will also want to bring your own soap, which is to be expected anywhere in Vietnam except international hotels.
During our stay, they were building the second pool, entirely by hand. We watched them level and smooth the soil, lay the tile piece by piece, chop the rock-hard soil by hand, haul landscaping stone fhundreds of feet from the road by wheel barrow, and work the entire day in the sun with few breaks. Everthing was done by hand, with hand tools and they made virtually no noise. They were just filling it when we left so if you visit, imagine building that in five days!
The breakfast each day was wonderful with fresh fruit and bread, homemade yogurt, eggs, cheese, meat, and always a Vietnamese staple such as pho. We never needed lunch. The free afternoon cocktails were a nice treat and were always made with fresh fruit. Dinner was very good and very authentic, especially the grill nights on the beach.
The hotel beach was very, very clean and had nice padded wooden lounges with large umbrellas. The ocean/gulf was awesome with the warmest water I have ever experienced. According to the staff, there are no jelly fish on that side of the island and we saw no creatures other than the many sand and hermit crabs. That side of the island is also very quiet so lounging was peaceful.
Staying on Phu Quoc was a great introduction to Vietnamese life and we will stay at Cassia Cottage again if we return. We walked the length of the beach and into town and no other resort or hotel looked as nice.
