“Nice pool, otherwise pretty crummy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

This place has a nice big pool with loungers around it and some umbrellas for shade. It lies on an ok section of the beach - sandy, shallow near the shore for kids - although quite narrow.
The sea view bungalows have terraces facing the sea. Plentiful hot water in the rooms.
But everything else about it is terrible. The staff barely speak English and are extremely slow. Apart from the pool man, none of them appear to take any pride in their work.
Our rooms were reasonably clean but everything in them was falling apart. And ours had an unpleasant smell (possibly bug spray) which we couldn't get rid of in 2 days of having the air con on. We had to put the mosquito nets up ourselves, which required considerable acrobatics and ingenuity since they too were falling apart and there weren't enough hooks in the ceiling. only 1 English TV channel.
Appalling breakfast.
Only 2 sun loungers on the beach (unless you count the one that was quite literally rotting in its spot) and shade only from a few trees. We had to go and get cushions from the pool loungers.
The whole place was filthy (apart from around the pool).
We paid extra for a sea view bungalow, and had a number of staff lounging and sleeping on benches right outside our terrace all afternoon with loud music playing.
1 decent pc in the reception area, and weak wifi near that, but no reception in the rooms.
I would have rated this Terrible if it wasn't for the pool and ok beach. It's a bit cheaper than other places on the beach, but not cheap enough for its state of decay. It appears to have had no work done for decades and the staff just don't care.

“A "Resort" full of mangy and worm infested dogs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

I dont know where to start. This was truly the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Whether it be the pubic hair on the pillows, stained bathtubs, intense lack of water pressure or the constant wining of the half dozen or so "saggy titted" dogs constantly wandering around the resort and kitchens. We arrived at this place late at night, there were no sheets on the bed only stained doona's. On further investigation, we noted that the mattresses were covered in their original plastic coverings! We ripped these off as it would have been so hot. The AC rattled all night and woke us up constantly when the motor kicked in. The Resort is populated by about 50 really weird statues of horses and mythical beasts. Really spooked the kids. The Beach here is about a metre wide. We spent all our time during the day at the other resorts. There is no excuse for filth - rather than sit around looking at each other, management could have spent time cleaning the rooms. Wouldnt recommend this place

Room Tip: Keep well clear of the generators and check that your bed mattress isnt covered in plastic

“Great value if you are not too fussy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2011

We stayed two weeks. The place is not the cleanest but just ask them to clean your room everyday and they will do it. Most clients are Vietnamese and their standards are not perhaps as high as some non-Vietnamese.
take the time to be nice to poorly paid staff and they will be nice to you.
Location is perfect and the restaurant food is surprisingly good.
Reading all the bad review here makes me think the people were oversold on the place in the first place.
This is cheap, friendly, basic place....with a swimming pool !!!

“(Ngan Sao) Weird & Certainly not Wonderful!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2011

We chose to stay at Ngan Sao - Thousand Stars Resort for 3 nights. This was because we were literally desperate. Everywhere else on Phu Quoc was fully booked. It was about $20 which, admittedly, is one of the cheapest places on the island. But there must be better value places out there! The room itself was very dated and strange. Some attempts had been made at some point to make it look stylish but these were now outdated and faded. Everywhere felt slightly dirty and very musty. It smelt slightly of damp. Our room was in a row of rooms so was one of the cheapest. It was right where deliveries are made and coach parties arrive and leave so was noisy. The rest of the resort was even more strange! The pool itself was ok but the surroundings are so scruffy. As other people have said, the resort and the beach in front of it is populated by plastic animals and buildings. Funny for some stupid photos but hardly something high on my list of priorities! The whole place is cheesy, old fashioned and very messy. We didn't really trust the hygiene standards of anywhere around the resort. The staff were mostly ok to give them credit and would try to help even when they spoke little English. The food and drink prices were so-so but again we just didn't really trust the cleanliness! There were also quite aggressive dogs around the resort at night and it's a hike to get to the town and a short stroll to get to nice bits of beach. The resort seems to be mainly popular with Vietnamese and Russians, and there are lots of big groups and families. I think you could probably find a basic little bungalow somewhere in a more backpacker-oriented resort, although Phu Quoc is mostly a bit pricey and resorty. Overall, this resort is not recommended but if you are desperate for a bed it does the job!

“What do you expect for 20$?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2011

Yes, it's run down to the point that it's comical. And yes, it is very Vietnamese/Chinese in style. Still we had the best time there. The room - with it's faults - was o.k. The breakfast also o.k. The staff untrained and struggling with English. You had to be firm with them.

We spent a lot of time on our little verandah facing the sea and in the evening we enjoyed the good little beach restaurants. We lunched and sunbathed elsewhere, because the hotel does not really have a beach. But again, what do you get for that kind of money?
