La Fontaine was a fantastically charming guest-house in Franschoek, a fantastically charming little town. We arrived early, so our rooms weren’t ready, but the owner/operator took time with us to make our dinner arrangements for the next two nights. We then proceeded to pass out in the living room lobby while waiting for our room to be cleared. This was greeted by nothing but smiles from the staff, which was a very welcoming feeling.
When we made it to our ‘room’ we found that we had our own chalet, with complementary muscatel in addition to the usual offerings of coffee. This was also a very welcoming feeling! The room was equipped with AC and a TV, but these were placed in such a way that didn’t take away from its classic European country-side charm. If I were an author, I would find this a suitable environment for reflection and breaking through any writer’s block I had. Alas, I’m an engineer, so all that inspiration just ended up being “101010…”.
Breakfast was tasty, and included my first taste of Marmite. There were several of the typical options – toast, boiled eggs, cheeses, ‘deli’ meats, and eggs to order. The only thing we requested that they couldn’t offer was some form of potatoes, but this was passable because the rest of the spread was sufficient. On our last day, we had to leave earlier than the normal breakfast was served, so La Fontaine provided a nice little to-go breakfast for us.
La Fontaine is walking distance from everything in Franschoek. I definitely recommend this guest house and Franschoek to anyone looking to relax.
Room Tip: Goldenrod room was cool and right near pool, but no wireless connection.
