“Fine but nothing spectacular”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

La Fontaine was okay -- definitely comfortable and well-located but nothing to rave about. The swimming pool was pleasant. The bathroom was spacious and had a great skylight, which let in tons of light. The skylight in the bedroom, however, was covered by a shade which was broken and would not retract, which made the room quite dark. It would have been good to open the bedroom curtains to let in some light, but our room directly adjoined the breakfast patio, so that would have meant no privacy at all. The best part was the location. It's within easy walking distance of some pretty great restaurants, including The Tasting Room at le Quartier Francais and Reuben's.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at La Fontaine. We will certainly attend to the catch on the ceiling skylight so that one can let in more light. We are looking at ideas to make the Lavender room's patio more private and have asked our son who is a qualified landscaper for his advice. He gained wonderful experience having studied at Longwood gardens, Pennsylvania USA. Regards, Kathie

“Elegant relaxation close to great restaurants”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

La Fontaine was a fantastically charming guest-house in Franschoek, a fantastically charming little town. We arrived early, so our rooms weren’t ready, but the owner/operator took time with us to make our dinner arrangements for the next two nights. We then proceeded to pass out in the living room lobby while waiting for our room to be cleared. This was greeted by nothing but smiles from the staff, which was a very welcoming feeling.

When we made it to our ‘room’ we found that we had our own chalet, with complementary muscatel in addition to the usual offerings of coffee. This was also a very welcoming feeling! The room was equipped with AC and a TV, but these were placed in such a way that didn’t take away from its classic European country-side charm. If I were an author, I would find this a suitable environment for reflection and breaking through any writer’s block I had. Alas, I’m an engineer, so all that inspiration just ended up being “101010…”.

Breakfast was tasty, and included my first taste of Marmite. There were several of the typical options – toast, boiled eggs, cheeses, ‘deli’ meats, and eggs to order. The only thing we requested that they couldn’t offer was some form of potatoes, but this was passable because the rest of the spread was sufficient. On our last day, we had to leave earlier than the normal breakfast was served, so La Fontaine provided a nice little to-go breakfast for us.

La Fontaine is walking distance from everything in Franschoek. I definitely recommend this guest house and Franschoek to anyone looking to relax.

Room Tip: Goldenrod room was cool and right near pool, but no wireless connection.

“round the corner from gourmet paradise”

A lovely place with large rooms and even larger loos with old fashioned claw footed baths. We stayed in the annexe which gave us a feeling it was our own home, especially with the complimentary port and sherry. Sadly it rained throughout our visit so we didn't enjoy the very inviting garden and wrap around verandah.

The hosts are charming..we loved our chat with them about cricket and rugby and they very kindly shared their excellent cricket library with us. Not many might know that this little town is where many of the rules governing one day cricket emerged.

The B&B is located round the corner from world class restaurants..try Reuben"s which was our favourite.

The view of the monument at the end of town withthe hills ringing it is specatcular!

“A very special find in Franschhoek”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

La Fontaine is in a great location a few minutes walk to Franschhoek's main street, where there are excellent restaurants, shops and even a great chocolate shop. Franschhoek has a relaxed feel about it and a lovely place to chill and take in the scenery and of course try the wine and wonderful food on offer. The guest rooms are pleasantly furnished with high ceilings and lovely wooden floors. We stayed in a room on the front with the shared balcony, which was a great place to sit and watch the sun go down with a glass of complimentary port. The bathroom was large with a bath and separate shower. Nice touches such as providing thick throws on the bed and hot water bottles in the wardrobe for winter months and colder nights - we were there in September and didn't need either thankfully. Good quality bed linen. Breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice, fresh and cooked to order if required. We had a half day morning wine tour with Keith from Redwoods, as this was all we could fit in to our schedule. Nevertheless it was informative, fun and Keith personally chauffeured us around the vineyards. We ate at the Common Room, very good for an informal supper and La Petite Ferme, where the food and wine was quite superb. Enjoy!

Room Tip: 1st floor overlooking the front with the shared balcony

“Excellent location in Franschhoek”

This guest house is superbly located in Franschhoek. The staff were very helpful and sorted out restaurants and a wine tour for us. The room was good (room 2) and the bed was exceptionally comfortable! No TV in the room but there are a couple of lounges with TV's if you wanted. There is a lovely communal balcony where you can sit, read and watch the sunset with a complimentary glass of port.

Breakfast is ok, service was a little slow compared to some places we stayed.

We would recommend the wine tour for a full day, with David a local guide, it is great fun and we managed to get round five of the best wineries in the area (including one in Stellenbosch).

Thank you for posting a review on your stay at La Fontaine and bringing to our notice that the service at breakfast was slow. To maintain our high standards, we cook the hot breakfast on demand so nothing is left standing in a bain marie for hours to get hard and leathery! We will try our best to quicken the process. Regards, Kathie
