“A very special place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

The Akademie Street Boutique Hotel is not a hotel in the traditional sense. It is a collection of houses on a single property in a leafy avenue just 2 minutes walk from the main street of Franschhoek.
Each house has its own character and attraction but all are appointed with beautiful antique furnishings and modern appliances. A great deal of care and attention have been devoted to the facilities that each suite affords...from the Illy coffee maker and the kitchenette with its complimentary snacks and drinks.
All of this makes Akademie Street a special place but words cannot adequately describe the warmth of the hospitality that awaited us as guests.
Katherine, Arthur and their staff believe in respecting each guests' privacy but they are also ready to provide advice and assistance with wine tours, restaurant bookings, cycle tours etc.
Breakfast in the garden was a particular delight. Fruit and home made jams with fresh bread and croissants followed (if you have the room!) with a cooked breakfast made to order as you wait.
I have stayed in many luxurious hotels throughout the world but can honestly say that staying in Akademie Street eclipsed them all.
A special thank you to Hazel and Katherine for making our stay so special.

“We would not stay anywhere else in Franschhoek.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

My partner & I stayed at Akamedie Street for 3 nights in Vreugde, a beautiful self contained garden suite with it's own private garden and plunge pool. The location of the guesthouse is perfect for walking into town and for exploring the wineries in the local area. Much thought has been given to ensuring guests have an enjoyable stay including the fabulous breakfast and little extras like the unlimited minibar with snacks at no extra cost. We were made to feel most welcome by Katherine & Arthur and their team and they seemed genuinely interested in us and our Franschhoek experience. We would love to have stayed longer and we would not stay anywhere else in Franschhoek.

“Fabulous in Franschhoek!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We were passing through Franschhoek for one night and stayed in Oortuiging. We felt immediately at home and quickly settled into the peaceful and relaxing setting of this charming cottage. Breakfast in the morning was something else... with the most delicious fresh fruit platter and an impressive cheese board. We wish we were not so pressed for time and could have stayed here much longer. Sadly there were building works in the house on the opposite side of the street which were quite noisy in the morning but I presume this is a temporary thing. I would definitely stay here again if I return to Franschhoek and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

“The very best in Franschhoek”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Arthur, Kathy, Hazel and the whole team at Akadamie Street are the most delightful people and quite superb hosts. Stay here if you want comfort, local insights and recommendations, a feeling that you are staying with very hospitable friends, delightful, spotless souroundings all a two minute walk from all that Franschhoek has to offer by way of shops and restaurants. We stayed for a week in Gelatenheid, outstanding in every sense. Breakfast on the terrace sets you up for the day.
No effort was spared in making sure we knew the best places to visit, or getting us a table in busy restaurants. Visit La Motte, have lunch at Cafe Bon Bon, Mon Plaisir at Chamonix, the Graff Delaire Estate near Stellenbosch, Tokara or Dieu Donne. A mix of spectacular settings and just really good comfortable restaurants, food and wines excellent. And there are plenty more if you have the stamina.
A cheeseboard and a decent bottle of red sat on your own verandah watching the sun set is no bad way to end the day.

Room Tip: Gelatenheid was absolutely delightful and well worth a little extra for all the space, the privacy a...

“Brilliant; would never stay anywhere else in Franschhoek.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

This is the best place we stayed at in all South Africa. The welcome is second to none. It is made clear that all drinks and laundry are included in the price, and you are encouraged to make full use. Breakfast is excellent, our room (Uitsig) was huge and well appointed. We could find nothing to suggest as an improvement.

An example, our room included a copy of the 2012 wine handbook, not one several years out of date, but 2012 version in January 2012. And not just one for all guests communally. That's the standard which Arthur and Katherine set.

We were greeted daily at the excellent breafasts, and any aspects of our daily programme which they could help with were set in hand. Arthur managed to fix a table at the Tasting Room at short notice which I am sure was local influence.

We are so grateful for the privilege of staying here.
