We stayed at Gorah Elephant Camp in September 2011 and was our first trip to South Africa and our first stay on safari. From the very outset the experience was amazing. The tents were large and luxurious and could not be faulted. The views from the tents were superb and we often sat outside watching zebra's, ostrich's, warthogs and monkeys casually walking past our tent. We even had monkey's jumping over the tent!
The food was out of this world, the food was what you would expect at a top restaurant and it continued from breakfast, dinner, afternoon tea and tea-time. The service was brilliant and the staff were friendly without being over-attentive (which I hate).
Now, onto the safari, the most important bit. Our guide was Megan who woke us up each morning with hot chocolate around 7.30am and we would go on a morning drive and then a afternoon/evening drive. Megan was brillant and was full of knowledge on the area and the animals and we learnt so much. The experience we had was so much more than we could have imagined. We saw so much and were able to get so close to the animals. It was magical watching the lions rest in the shade literally 6 foot away and having elephants at dusk walking past our truck, peering in and having a good look. My personal favourite was the buffalo following our truck in the evening and all we could see was its eyes and the sound of it grunting.
When you return from the evening drive, the main house is lit up with candles and you are invited to have your evening meal or to simply sit outside and have a drink. There is a book available to read at the house and it tells the history of the house and gorah itself. This place is full of history and being there was magical.
