“A pretty good choice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2007

I stayed at the Residence Inn Somerset for several weeks and found it to be a good place to stay. As with all Residence Inns, the rooms are spacious and have a kitchen, which is great for people staying more than a few nights who don't want to eat out every night.

At this hotel, the studio suites are as large as the 1 bedroom suites, with the only difference being that there is no wall separating the bedroom from the living room, and that there is 1 TV instead of two. So if you're looking to save money, a studio can be a good choice.

I found the staff to be mostly helpful. I had two maintenance requests while I was staying and both were taken care of promptly. The front desk staff I dealt with were also nice. The indoor pool and spa were also nice, and relatively unusual for an extended stay hotel.

There were a few negatives though. I found the housekeeping very uneven. Some days they would take out the trash, other days they wouldn't, they only changed the kitchen towels occasionally (and not on a schedule), etc. Worst of all, one time they stripped the bed and took the sheets and pillowcases out of the room but didn't return with new sheets until 8 hours later -- after I had called twice. They were apologetic, but I shouldn't have had to call multiple times just to have linens on my bed.

I didn't really care about the free breakfast and nightly hors d'oeuvres when choosing the Residence Inn, but if it matters to you they were so-so. Some days the hot breakfast items were cold and other days they ran out of several items quickly, but it was at least nice to be able to grab a yogurt and some granola for free.

I did note that the prices at the little convenience store/vending area were outrageous -- $4 for a bag of chips. But if you can wait a bit, the hotel will purchase groceries from a local supermarket at whatever the supermarket prices are and deliver them to your room.

Overall my experience at the Residence Inn was good, but considering the large number of extended stay hotels in the area and the good but not excellent service I wouldn't pay extra to stay at the Residence Inn.

“Great Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2007

So I am staying/stayed at this hotel for 3 months. Well over 3 months. I am still there currently, but I had to write a review. I have been very picky asking for them to hook special things up to my tv and get stuff in my room. They are bending over backwards to get it done. Also, there is an indoor pool which is nice. It only goes to 5ft though, but its a nice way to relax. The gym is not bad and breakfast is nice. There are some front desk people that are a little rude, but that is normally the late at night ones.

  • Liked — The rooms were nice and bed was comfortable
  • Disliked — The small store. There is not much to choose from.

“Friendly little hotel is clean and well priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2006

We stayed here the weekend of March 11 and found the facilities to be in good condition, the staff to be extra friendly and helpful and the breakfast delicious. They breakfast included the usual waffles, pastries, oatmeal, etc but also Asian foods and specialties and we noticed Asian newspapers in the lobby. This is no posh spot but the staff goes the extra mile: printing out Mapquest directions after suggesting a restaurant (which turned out to be truly amazing). We are Marriott rewards members and had recently added two "preferences" to our profile and the RI managed to have both extra feather pillows and the WSJ in our room, along with a personalized welcome note. Nice touch. The hotel is clean (the rug in front of the sink was a tad flecked with bleach from obvious repeated cleanings.... some stains aren't abad thing). The hotel is located in an industrial/office park area so on the weekend it is very quiet but nothing is open -- everything is a car drive away. But there is an area with trees and grass that is perfect to walk your dog. RIs allow pets which is a plus. Our rate was about $90/nite for a one bedroom, with breakfast.

“A Truly Amazing Hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2005

I had the pleasure of staying at the Residence Inn Somerset NJ because we had a fire in our house a month ago. I brought my family to the hotel at 2:00am and immediately, we felt better. The staff was warm and inviting, and so very empathetic. A member of the hotel staff actually went out and bought us food, some clothes to get through the night, and a calling card. They really cared about our well being. Our first night was free and they worked with my insurance agent to get us the best rate. Though I am happy to be back in my house, I will always have a warm place in my heart for the people at the Residence Inn. We were so comfortable and the rooms were big enough for my entire family. I recommend this hotel to everyone who may travel to Somerset. Thank you again Residence Inn!

“Not Bad but Staff Needs to Get Organized”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2005

My wife and I stayed here due to a work related party that her company was hosting nearby. The party coincided with Valentine's Day so we decided to make a weekend of it. We booked their "Romance Package" which included champaigne upon arrival, strawberries and free breakfast.

When we arrived, the front desk noted our package and said that everything would be on it's way shortly. An hour and a half later, nothing arrived. Since we were getting ready to go out, I called and was told that they would look into it. An hour later, the manager arrived (with an attitude) and brought us the refreshments. We were literally heading out the door so we had to wait until we returned to enjoy it and not as we had planned.

The hotel itself is very modern. Our room was very clean and modern. The bathroom was a bit small but not too bad.

We had breakfast the following morning and it was very good. They have a buffet on the weekends and made to order omlettes and eggs. It was pretty good and the items were well stocked. The problem was the service. We were seated pretty quickly but it took a good 20 minutes for someone to show up at our table.

So, apart from some service issues, it was a good stay overall.
