Due to the fact that many family members were going to be out of town, this was our first- ever Christmas Day dinner not eaten at home. Molly Pitcher Inn advertised a Christmas Day Sunday Brunch Buffet for 50.00 per adult, and since their regular Sunday brunch has a good reputation, we decided to try it. There were two seatings: 11:00 and 12:30. We chose the second seating, so that we wouldn't feel rushed. As it turned out, 1 1/2 hours was more than enough time, and we would not have been rushed at the first seating. When I called about the dress code, I was told that it was business casual, but a number of people had sweaters and jeans, and it was not a big deal. The food was beautifully displayed, complete with carved ice centerpieces and edible garnishes. The arrangements of the food items were logical...omelet station first, then breakfast foods, then carving station, etc. The food itself was of high quality and was well prepared. Oysters- and clams-on-the-half-shell were welcomed indulgences, and the three pates were exotic without being too far out there. The carving station was great: roasted turkey, duck, sirloin steak, and boneless pork loin. The cold salads and antipasto items were interesting: baby asparagus, roasted cauliflower, and a seafood salad brimming with big tasty shrimp. In a second room was a crepe station, a second omelet station, and a huge assortment of cheeses/fruits/desserts (regular and sugar-free). The service was attentive and friendly. It was a great meal, with none of the usual Christmas day stress of preparing it and cleaning up after it. There are two things, however, that I think could be improved upon. The first would be to include soft drinks and coffee in the price of the meal. Hitting our party with an extra 30.00 in charges for diet soda, iced tea, and coffee seemed excessive to me. My other suggestion is to offer a station of kid-friendly items: homemade mac and cheese, meatballs, pizza, chicken fingers, etc. There wasn't much at this fancy buffet for a typical kid, much less a picky one. Who wants a sad, whining, miserable and hungry child Christmas dinner, especially when each adult is paying $50.00? Not to mention that fact that my own young adult sons would have preferred some kid-friendly items to the oysters and pate. But, other than that, Molly Pitcher Inn's Christmas brunch was elegant without being snobby, warm, welcoming, filled with good food, and, best of all, stress free. I'd definitely go back.
