“Research your stay before you commit”

I have mixed comments about our stay at the Pillars. The property and overall feel of the home and gardens is tired and slightly neglected. Our room the Master had a comfortable bed and was clean but the common areas needed a general cleaning. The stairs and downstairs needed vacuuming. The general neighborhood felt like is was borderline safe for two young women to stay in. The hosts were very friendly and extremely helpful. The breakfast was very good and plentiful. We had a great visit at a nearby spa (Castle Spa) and a town nearby called Westfield where you could walk around safely at night and visit shops and restaurants. I would not recommend for women to use the Plainfield station at night. The Pillars does has repeat customers who we met who were very nice but I felt their website oversells the product. It was not a place where you would want to spend all day lounging although with some housekeeping, gardening, handyman assistance they could get closer to what they are trying to achieve. A large house like that needs a lot of attention which it is currently not receiving.

“Nice B&B, but needs to be cleaned.”

We stayed at this B&B for two nights in September after looking at pictures on their web site. Lamont and Nancy are gracious hosts, and Lamont prepared great breakfasts both days. Nancy prepared a yummy baked item. Directions to local restaurants were appreciated, but directions to the train to NYC were poor. While the place is old and charming, this house could have used a good cleaning. The entry had the same dust balls for all three days we were there. The room we stayed in had bath toilet items left from a previous guest and a half empty water bottle left on the dresser. The air conditioner and window sills were very dirty. The room was advertised as having two recliners, but one didn't work. We did enjoy the hosts and with a little work, this could be a great B&B.

“Time to relax”

We have just returned from our road trip to some of Canada and across to North & East states of America and I have to say that our stay at 'The Pillars' was spectacular, just like a page from a story book. The home is a gorgeous old Victorian B & B with each room decorated and kept to the ultimate in distinction. Lamont & Nancy are so tuned into the needs and comforts of their guess that you never have to ask for anything because it's already their or done.
We chose to have our morning breakfast out on the porch which each morning was just another culinary delight. Also at times the company of our hosts to sit with us relaxing on the porch swaping stories made you feel like you were at home with family or your best friends.
When you do ask for direction or information of the area and beyond they are able to not only tell you and give you choices but also give you maps, timetales etc. before you go on your way so there is no chance of getting lost..
We took our toy poodle on this trip with us and not only were we made to feel at home so was she. We can't recommend 'The Pillars of Plainfield' enough, it is the best.

“Truly Home from Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2007

Myself and my 2 teenage sons had the most relaxing 3 night stay at this homely bed and breakfast run by a charming couple. Nothing was too much trouble. We were given comprehensive directions and information about the local area and beyond. Also a list of recommended restraunts of where to eat for a varied budget. The tastefully themed room and en suite shower room were extremley clean and the bed was heavenly. We had a different gourmet breakfast every day with a choice of time to eat and a daily paper in a beautifully laid up Dining room. There was a plentiful supply of freshly baked cookies, soda and sherry which could be enjoyed sitting in a wicker swing on the porch or in the comfortable sitting room. The property is located in a quiet residential street in a town that is well positioned with easy access to the interstate and has a train service (around 1 hour) to Manhattan. I cannot recommend this establishment highly enough.

“Charming older B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2006

We visited this B&B on an open house. Though we did not stay there overnight it was charming to visit. The new owners are very nice people. We toured the home and are planning a visit very soon. The new owners are in the process of changing many things in the home. We spent much time talking with them. The home in the present state is still very beautiful and clean. We have stayed in many B&B's and this one measures up to the best that we stayed in. We are looking forward to our stay in the next few months. We would recommend this property to anyone.
