“Truly Home from Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2007

Myself and my 2 teenage sons had the most relaxing 3 night stay at this homely bed and breakfast run by a charming couple. Nothing was too much trouble. We were given comprehensive directions and information about the local area and beyond. Also a list of recommended restraunts of where to eat for a varied budget. The tastefully themed room and en suite shower room were extremley clean and the bed was heavenly. We had a different gourmet breakfast every day with a choice of time to eat and a daily paper in a beautifully laid up Dining room. There was a plentiful supply of freshly baked cookies, soda and sherry which could be enjoyed sitting in a wicker swing on the porch or in the comfortable sitting room. The property is located in a quiet residential street in a town that is well positioned with easy access to the interstate and has a train service (around 1 hour) to Manhattan. I cannot recommend this establishment highly enough.

“Charming older B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2006

We visited this B&B on an open house. Though we did not stay there overnight it was charming to visit. The new owners are very nice people. We toured the home and are planning a visit very soon. The new owners are in the process of changing many things in the home. We spent much time talking with them. The home in the present state is still very beautiful and clean. We have stayed in many B&B's and this one measures up to the best that we stayed in. We are looking forward to our stay in the next few months. We would recommend this property to anyone.

“Good Time at The Pillars”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2006

I spent several days at The Pillars in a lovely room (Yates) with a four poster canopy bed and a gas fireplace, that was clean and fresh. After reading an earlier review, I checked with the owners on the bathroom situation, and found that only one of the seven rooms has a hall bath (the room and bath are down a side hall which is curtained off). My room and all the others had private baths in the suite. The room both the other recent reviewers stayed in was closed for redecoration and refurbishment while I was there, so there should be improvements now.

Breakfast was served in an airy Victorian dining room, and was always good. Nancy and Lamont are pleasant hosts, who are working to refubish and upgrade the property as quickly as possible. This is a fun old house with bay windows everywhere, comfortable public spaces and a great porch for relaxing. I had a very good time there, and everyone who came while I was there seemed quite impresssed with the house and the hospitality.

“Very nice hosts but NOT clean at all”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2006

The hosts were very nice and helpful and the old house is charming.

Unfortunatly we experienced in the Clementine Yates Suite a lack of cleanliness which was NOT acceptable. Especially at a price of $ 180 per night. Both the room and the bathroom were NOT cleaned with a rag for quite some time and NOT even vacuumed/dust cleaned.

We are not picky people and we have stayed at places in Costa Rica, Vancouver Island and Tadousacc a few years ago where cleanliness was not much better. But these were backpacker rooms and we paid $ 30 - $ 50.

For a place such as "The Pillars" cleanliness must be self-evident. Breakfast was also not good.

Too bad, with such a great old big house and 2 very nice hosts this could be an excellent choice to stay, but it wasn't at all.

“New Owners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2005

I stayed at this B&B for 2 nights over the Thanksgiving holiday. The first night I was the only "guest," however there is a long-term couple living there with a doberman (and the owners have their own large dog as well) and the other rooms were filled with family. The second night there was another couple staying there for business and they left immediately after breakfast for business. The owners just took over about 2.5 weeks before my stay. This is a very old house, and as with old houses converted to B&Bs they are always in need of work due to burst pipes and window leaks, etc. The furnishings in the main entrance and dining room and music room are lovely. They are in the process of making the front door the front entrance as right now you come through the back door and walk through the kitchen and it makes a different first impression. The room I had was large and clean however the bathrooms (while private for your own use during your stay) are outside of the room, so you do have to walk in the hall to get to the bathroom. The furnishings in my room were wicker furniture (a very large round outdoor glass top wicker table and 3-4 wicker chairs and '70s era dresser and a wicker bed that was very comfortable. The dried sponges under the wheels to keep it quiet were an interesting touch. Lamont and Nancy are a great couple and very welcoming. Lamont does the cooking and he created two great egg/casserole-type dishes both days. The neighborhood looked okay during the day, however the route to it that they direct your through is speculative/city-like (if you're not familiar with Jersey at all). I recommend staying here for business or as an overnight stay visiting relatives. I do not recommend this for a romantic weekend or special occasion as you will be disappointed.
