I'm usually in agreement with most other trip-advisor reviews, and the Isaac Hilliard house is rated well overall. But my experience was not as nice as others conveyed, possibly because I stayed in the off season?
Phyllis was kind, well-travelled, and caring, but the amenities were sub par for the price of $120/night.
I stayed in November and probably won't return. I liken this B&B experience to staying at a friend's grandma's house, where nothing has been updated in a few decades. There's old-charming, and old-old, and this is the latter. It smelled a little musty, and so those with allergies should avoid. There were water stains on the cieling of my room, probably from a leaky roof. The furniture looked worn, and the shower liner looks like it's from 1980. I was given a room that faced the road, and the house is right on a main street, so the cars and trucks kept me up late and woke me in the morning. The night was cold and drafty, and the blankets were thin. The breakfast was greasy and unappetizing.
Overall, it's a bed in an old house if you need one and don't want to drive a while to get away from the shady motels near the military base. Just bring ear plugs and set low expectations.
Room Tip: The Rose and Raspberry are facing the road, where it's noisy and there's traffic throughout...

We thank you for your review of the Isaac Hilliard House. As for this being an old house, you are indeed correct. The house was built in 1749...consequently it is an 'Old House.'
Our Rates are posted on the 'Terms and Conditions' section of our website.
The rate you were charged was $110.00 plus NJ State Tax of 7% and the customary State occupancy fee of 5%. I should have explained the charges. Our decor and amenities reflect the past and are in keeping with an 'OLD house'.
Your reference to the experience of staying at a 'friend's grandma's house' is indeed a compliment. We have the distinct privilege of hosting many military personnel who, upon returning from combat, enjoy the feeling of the warmth of a grandmother's house. For this opportunity we are most grateful to be in the location of a military base to serve the nation's most valuable citizens.
We are not a resort destination.
We do appreciate your comments.
