We stayed for one night in January. The hotel is smack dab in the center of everything, which was great.
Room 420 was a nice size. It overlooks the small park that sits in front of the hotel. The stained glass windows of the church across the street were also very pretty at night. Although we were very close to the elevator, there was no noise problem at all. The bathroom was a good size and was clean.
The king bed was comfortable and they use the 3 sheet bedding style, which I love. The TV sat in a wall unit that was not exactly my style but was as pictured in the advertising. The room was clean, but never got quite as warm as we would have liked. There was a thermostat in the room, and I could feel air coming from somewhere behind the bed, but it was more of a cool draft than real heat. The heat source was quiet, and on a warmer day the heat might not have been an issue. My husband, who is never cold, woke up during the night due to the room temperature.
Also cold was the lobby! That was FREEZING. When those giant doors slide open, a cold wind comes in unrestricted. There's no way you could comfortably sit in the lobby on even a mild winter day. I don't know how the desk clerks can work in that temperature. They remained cheerful, bless their hearts.
We opted for the full breakfast package with the room. The restaurant was roomy, and the hostess greeted us promptly when we entered. Unfortunately, the breakfast was the biggest disappointment of our stay.
The regular price of $14 per person made us expect a nice, to finer dining breakfast experience. That was not the case. The inconveniences started with the coffee. It was rather bitter, and there was no cream or half and half offered, only milk. Our table had no table cloth and was wobbly. There were smears all over the table top from being wiped down with a dirty bar towel (I didn't see this happen, but that is what it looked like.) They offer "make your own" belgian waffles which I love, but can get at many budget hotels. The waffle batter was light, but had little taste. I will give kudos for the terrific variety of fresh berries they offered, including raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. That was a treat, and that certainly is not available at budget hotels.
My husband had an omelet made to order which was OK. One of my plates had a dried lettuce leaf stuck to it. There was a howling noise in the seating area that started and stopped at random. It sounded like a vacuum cleaner. The server said it was caused by the wind blowing across a fan in the ceiling/roof. Another sound problem occurred every time someone opened or closed the lids of the chafing dishes. The hinges let out a loud groan when being opened and again upon being closed. It was a never ending series of groans fighting with the music playing overhead.
Overall the location is excellent, but somewhat overpriced ($182 inc. tax, & breakfast. Parking was an additional $15.). The inconveniences of cold temperatures in the room/lobby were negative factors, as was the irritating breakfast experience. I would stay again, but I'd lower my expectations for breakfast, or go elsewhere. And I recommend wearing a coat down to the lobby if you need to sit there for any length of time during the winter season!
