“Nice, But Check the Room First!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2011

Stayed at this Courtyard with my daughter for one night, during late June 2011. Believe it or not, I had stayed here way back in 1976, when it was a Ramada Inn. I grew up in Montvale, but had not been back for about eight years. Was surprised when I saw that Marriott had purchased the old Ramada. I have to say that they did a very nice job in the remodel. The place looks new from top to bottom. To make things better, as the hotel was constructed decades ago, the rooms are very large and the construction is solid -- no paper-thin walls here! The room doors, however, do have very large gaps at the bottom -- probably left over after they removed the (shag) carpeting from the room entry area. Still, throw a couple towels down along the door sill, and it will be blissfully quiet.

The rooms have been redone in VERY nice fashion, and I found the bathroom particularly well done. This was by far the nicest Courtyard in which I've stayed, and I do wonder if it is because it is a "redo."

Okay...you're wondering about the title of my review. Damp! We arrived at the hotel late -- around 9:30pm -- after a horrendous drive. Tired, we got into the room and immediately unpacked, changed, and got into bed. My daughter commented that her bed felt "weird," and when I entered the other bed, I realized the sheets and comforter were damp. I should rpt SHOULD have gotten dressed right then and asked to change rooms, but it was so late and my daughter was already nearly asleep, so I rolled over and tried to sleep. It was hard, as I constantly woke up and was reminded of the damp pillows, sheets, comforter, etc. I have no idea why the room was so damp. The patio door was closed, and the A/C unit was running all night. We were, however, next to the pool, and that might be my only theory as to the dampness.

When I went to shower the next morning, I was dismayed to feel that all of the towels were damp. I do not think the room had been occupied in a while, as when I went to open the box of bath soap, the box kind of "melted" as it was so damp, and the bar of soap inside was wet to the touch and warped. Perhaps it is was only the room in which we stayed. Still, the hotel is very nice, quiet, and in a good location. My biggest caution would be to check out the room AS SOON AS YET GET IN. If the bed is damp, or whatever, change before its too late.

Room Tip: Check to make sure the room isn't damp!

“Internet connectivity at this hotel is horrendous - AVOID THIS HOTEL”

I was booked into this hotel by my client. The rooms are clean and comfortable but for a business person staying on corporate travel, the lack of a good internet connection makes this the WRONG CHOICE if you are on business. There is NO wireless internet in the rooms and the "wired" internet is so clogged with traffic that it is virtually impossible to get any work done, on a VPN or any other type of corporate internet site. The management of the hotel is well aware of this problem but unfortunately, apologies don't get you the wasted time back. I would not recommend this hotel to anybody who expects to use the internet.

“A great Courtyard Marriott -- except for the nonstop fraternity party every night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2011

We travel to Bergen County very frequently to visit family, and have probably stayed at this Courtyard at least 10 times. We like it because it's very convenient, reasonably priced, and the hotel itself is quite nice. Modern decor, comfortable rooms, very clean, nice staff, etc.

But I have to give it only 3 stars because nearly every time we've stayed there, there's been a virtual fraternity party raging in the hallway all night long. I seriously don't understand it. It's happened at all times of year, and regardless of whether or not there was an event happening at the hotel. Almost every Friday or Saturday night we are woken up at around 1 or 2 am by people shouting & laughing in the hallway, and it continues on & off until 4 or 5 am. What is that? I don't understand why people can't party in their rooms. Last weekend it was a group of twenty-somethings returning from a night out, and we had to listen to one guy yelling "ANTHONY!!!" over and over for 3-4 hours. It was truly unbelievable.

Calling the desk doesn't usually fix the problem. They send someone up, they ask the people to be quiet and go in their rooms, and then 45 minutes later it starts up again. As a result, we NEVER get a good night's sleep at this hotel. I'm sure we will continue to stay there from time to time, just for convenience sake, but I truly dread the nighttime when the craziness starts up. I really wish the hotel would step up and get a handle on this issue, because we do like everything about the place.

Dear Travel 141,
Thank you for your very positive feedback regarding the hotel. I do apologize on behalf of the very disruptive people that continue to carry on in the hallways after hours. We have a very strict no party policy which not only includes the guest rooms but the gathering in the corridors as well. We have signs posted near the entrances and we even hand out a custom letter that addresses this type of behavior especially when we have wedding groups in-house to remind them to be respectful to other guests who are trying to sleep or just relax. We have absolutely no issue with contacting the police to get our point across to those offenders who just don't care and we have escorted people off the property in the past. We will continue to make every effort to stop this disruptive behavior whenever we encounter it. We can also assign you a room in a less traveled area of the hotel that will minimize the potential of people walking past your room to get to the elevator. Please let us know the next time you book with us and we will make every effort to make sure you have a great night's sleep. Thank you, Paul Viapiano - General Manager

“Perfectly fine hotel if all you want to do is sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

This place could really do better.
Business travellers need, at the very least, working wireless connectivity (or fixed line connectivity which actually is better than old fasioned dial up), availability of food after 10pm and a swimming pool which is open.

The room was great and the people who work there are almost apologetic about the lobby bar closing so early, the food stopping and the quality of the internet connectivity.

There is a Fire and Stone attached, but that is not the sort of place you can work with colleagues over a quiet drink and late night snack.

But as a hotel, the buck stops with the management to sort it out.

“Good location, fair value and overall a comfortable stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

We had a couple of rooms and did a lot of local family visiting. The hotel is easy to get to, handy to NYC without much effort and in a quiet area. The standard rooms are a king with pull out couch. The rooms comfortable and reasonably large.

Nothing magical, but a nice hotel, clean with good service.
