“The bugs...bugged me out”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2009

I booked this hotel with travelnow.com because of the excellent price. I also thought that it was a good location. It was a bit difficult to find at first, because you have to drive through a car dealership. It's best to turn at the big blue HOLMES (I think that is the name sign...staff showed me).
The room I ordered was a double. Once I arrived I was pleased with the outside appearance and it seemed somewhat quiet. First problem was the double actually means, one bed. I planned on bringing my son to stay over so I upgraded to a double double? There are no bathtubs, which was not a plus but the shower was nice.
The room was clean, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly.
First, I noticed one bug, and killed it without thinking too much about it. Except for the fact that it was a strange bug that I had never seen before. It looked like a big roach that had been smashed and killed and then came back to life. Then I saw another bug (the same kind), but killed it and thought that would be the last of it. I woke up at 5:30 in the morning to see that there were a whole gang of these big bugs, all over the ceiling, curtains, lights. Not only did they look horrible, but to my surprise they could also fly.
I freaked out and called staff, she came promptly and moved me and my son to another room. I was kinda afraid of moving to another room because I thought there would be bugs there too. But I went anyway to look, all the lights were on and there wasn't a bug in sight. I didn't sleep, because I was still shaken up. I left a few hours later, and felt okay because I didn't see another bug. I came back in the evening.
Around 9p.m or so, I saw one of the same hideous zombie bugs. I seriously thought that maybe it came with me from the other room. I killed it and didn't see any sign of anymore.
I was tired, but I had things to do on my pc. I happened to glance down at my leg. For a second I thought to myself, I never knew I had a beauty mark there. Then it moved, and I was shocked that it was a bug, because it was so tiny. I became extremely nervous, and looked down at the bed. I saw a white bug, a gray bug and lot's of tiny little bugs crawling around. I started searching on the internet to identify these tiny bugs, and came to the conclusion that they were bedbugs. At least the light brown ones were bed bugs to my knowledge
I killed some of them, and decided that I would have to leave first thing in the morning.
I called the front desk and while the lady was there, I showed her the ones that I had killed. Then there was one of the flying big ones, I killed it and then another, killed it too.
She was very sympathetic, but while speaking to me, the police showed up. Then she came back and while speaking the fire alarm went off, and wouldn't go off for about 7 minutes. My son is autistic so all of this was really too much for him.
I couldn't sleep (even tho I was awake since 5:30a.m.), but I had to let my son sleep because he was exhausted from being out all day. I kept every single light on in the room and turned the lamps to face the bed. Since bedbugs don't like the light. I did notice a few little bites/bumps on my arm but they have disappeared. I didn't notice any on my son.
At first they didn't want to give me back all of my money. Travelnow said that they would do whatever the hotel agreed to do. First, he said that he spoke to the manager and she agreed to refund me for the two nights that I didn't stay there. I said "no way", I called back to speak to the manager of the hotel and was told that she wasn't there. So I left a very detailed message with the young lady who answered the phone. Later on the same night, the same young lady that I spoke to called me back and said that she was the manager and that she had spoken to the other girl. ha ha Whatever, she agreed to give me back all of my money which was due to me. I don’t know why she lied but I don't hold it against her. Maybe I caught her off guard.
End of story, if you don't have a lot of money, and have no problem with all kinds of weird bugs this may be okay. But who wants the risk of bringing bedbugs home with them.
I don't think that they will get rid of their bugs any time soon. I have pics from my phone and I will post them later. Trust me they were so hideous and scarey looking. I still have no idea what kind they were. In fact, scratch the lack of money statement because without travelnow.com the price was about 51 dollars. Not worth the trouble.
If you seriously don't care about bugs, it's a decent place. It was fairly clean, fairly roomy and the air conditioning/heat worked. Good hot water and all appliances worked.
Very responsive staff, which was very important. I really couldn't have dealt with bad attitudes plus my stress, so thank God! God helps because I know I would have had an infestation at home if it weren't for prayer and just his loving protection. Always pray!

“Nice hotel...great value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2009

I read a few reviews of the Crossland which sounded like it was hidden somewhere and very hard to find. I didn't have any trouble locating it, as there are signs with arrows at the entrance drive. And though the hotel is behind a Cadillac dealership, I found this to be a specious complaint. In fact, the location was a bonus, as I've stayed in other hotels along busy Rt. 73 in NJ, and this one is much quieter than those right on the road. It's basic but well equipped. Kitchen is a nice bonus. Very clean. Friendly staff. And the price is so right! Try it...you'll like it!

“Very Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2009

I stayed at Crossland for four nights and was very satisfied. The room w/ AAA discount and tax cost me $47.23 per night. I also paid $4.99 for use of the wireless internet connection for my stay. The connection was sufficient but not super fast. The room was a bit small but not confining in anyway. The room had a reasonably firm mattress and TV with several cable stations. It also included a small galley kitchen with dishes, dorm size refrigerator and pots. The room was very clean as was the rest of the grounds and property.

My only real complaint is the hotel is very hard to get into the first time from Rt. 73. It took me three tries before I was successful. When I would miss it I would have to take the next jug handle to turn around and then another one a mile away to get going the right direction. You have to turn into the Ford dealership to get to the hotel. I used to live in the area for five years and yet it gave me conniptions getting on the property. In NJ left turns don't exist on major secondary roads.

I don't understand the negative reviews of the Crosslands. The staff was always courteous and helpful to me. I've wondered if some people may be reviewing the Crossroads motel which is just before you get to the Crosslands. The Crossroads truly looks like a dump. There was an interesting mix of people staying there. Several were construction workers from out of town, a few families (I guess on welfare), and some Doctors doing internships. This not a fancy place but it is a nice enough and safe place to stay for the money. The dump motels in the area cost more and offer less. The big chains in that area charge a lot more for having a conference and business center along with a swimming pool and exercise room that I didn't need.

“TERRIBLE - right from the start and only got worse!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2007

This place is a joke. I just checked in, and had planned to stay for a month. However after being here for about an hour, I plan to check out tomorrow. When I arrived at 2:30 pm to check in and get my room, they did not have a room available until 3:00 pm. If that was not enough - the price quote I had been given last week went up over $50. After hauling all my bags up to the third floor - the room was even more disappointing then be over charged. The room was half the size that the website shows it to be. The bed is so small - I wonder how we will sleep on it tonight. The fridge is only a half size fridge. This is the most ridiculous thing I have seen in a long time. I won’t even be staying the week that I paid for. I would not send someone that I did not like to this hotel - let alone my friends. Stay away from this place!!

  • Liked — Nothing!!!
  • Disliked — The rude front desk clerk, the small room, small bed, small fridge, the hassle to get luggage to my room - shall I continue??

“There is a good reason for your having difficulty in gaining access to this dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2007

First of all let me say that having been away from the area, but familiar with the roads, even I found that gaining access to this hotel is quite flustrating. You have to enter into the car dealership lot on the Rt. 73 side.

Only then do you begin to trust your instincts and have that sick feeling that you have been taken and will not pleased with your selection. The first visual impression that you have is of a unkept, sloppy and cold check-in desk. Strictly a no-frills establishment.

This location has three floors in which there is one center elevator which will take you to your floor or you can take the stairs. The elevator reaked of cigarette smoke and the floor of the elevator needed a good cleaning.

Again the room lacked warmth, had basically a cheap wooded table with no chair, simple plywood dressed (3 drawers) on which the 19 inch color tv was located, a small kitchenette consisting of a small microwave, small refrigertor which had not been defrosted, no ice machine on premises nor ice tray, one small trash can which was located in the bathroom with a bar of soap which was already opened...

The room was strictly cheap and economical, as most people whom were there appeared to be men whom had their work trucks on premises, or were families whom called this place "home. I do not think I need to say more, you can get where I am coming from.

I am really quite surprised that I obtained this 2* hotel through PRICELINE however. 99% of the time I am satisfied and feel that I got a good deal for my buck through them, however in this case I really do feel that you should drop this chain or location from your customers as this time you got this one over on me, but never again. Avoid this location at all cost, spend the extra money and enjoy your over-night accomodations somewhere else.

  • Liked — it was a roof over our head, strickly a no-frills establishment
  • Disliked — the atmosphere, working men whom rented weekly accomodations and families whom called this place "home"
