“Wasn't the worst place on the planet however,”

I needed a place to stay very close to Staten Island as my plan to stay with a friend for the night fell through. Traveling with a dog that weighs 100 pound can put a damper on any emergency hotel plans. I needed to find a pet friendly hotel, quick! So after checking on the internet, my only option was Extended Stay, Edison-Raritan. When I called the desk person was a bit curt, and didn't seem to know much of anything. Upon arriving to a completely full parking lot, which was dingy and dark, I noticed a few seedy types outside. Upon entering the dingy, dark tiny lobby the curt woman appeared. She complained about having to work the night shift.and was bothered by me asking for a room. She made it so obvious that she was doing me a favor by doing her job. Observing allot of people coming and going through the lobby, I was a bit concerned. The people that were coming and going through the lobby were not guests of the hotel and were there to visit guests. Hummm, makes sense being there was a full parking lot. I questioned my decision to stay there. I wanted a shower and a bed! I was charged the $25.00 fee for having my dog, which I really wasn't too thrilled about, but I was in a bind and really had no choice. My bill for one night stay came to $138.00. I also had to pay extra for the internet service. That pissed me off!. After driving over 9 hours with the dog, spending the day on Staten Island in 95 degree temperatures, I was cooked. Upon entering my room all I wanted was a shower and a bed. Turned to double lock the door and realized there was no additional lock. I was going to go back downstairs and ask for a different room, but going back down meant taking the dog and having to deal with Ms. Curt again. I was a bit surprised when I saw the room was decent. Didn't smell or wasn't noticeably dirty. The bed seemed comfortable, and the pillows were decent. The air conditioner worked okay, but it seemed low and high were the same speed, so it took a while for the room to cool off. Yay! A coffee pot in the room! I decided to make myself a cup of coffee and relax with my dog. The coffee pot didn't work, so I fiddled with it a bit and got it to work although it did leak some grimy water from the bottom of the machine. Got right on the internet with no difficulties. Well, it should be that way being I had to pay for it. The toilet also ran and ran till I had to fiddle with the handle to make it stop. So far, so good. The shower was great and I got a good nights sleep. In the morning, I made some more coffee and took the dog out. The day (morning staff) were very welcoming and friendly. Completely different from the night shift. There were a few people coming and going at that time and the parking lot seemed empty. I am convinced that this is a party all night place to stay. Someone gets the room and then its ON! I wasn't really concerned about safety. I have a huge "trained" dog and take care of my own personal security. I will have to be making monthly trips back to Staten Island and need a place to stay for one night. I will try not to stay here because of the expense. I found them to be outrageously priced for really nothing to write home about. If you are not in a bind, don't have a pet, and have the means, don't stay here. There are many other hotels which offer much much more at the same or cheaper rate.

“This place is a Dump and UNSafe”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2010

Do not stay at this DUMP. While staying with 40 high school students on a business trip we had to witness an NYPD Drug Bust. The rooms smell, the place attracts seedy people and the place smells of POT! Hence the drug BUST. The hotel staff could care less. One of rooms we checked into had cat pee on the bed and cigarette butts on the floor. The walls are paper thin and the place is loud all night. People constantly moving in and out all night. DO NOT bring young children or teenagers to the hotel, it is unsafe and I beleive the hotel staff knows and ignores these problems. This is a drug infested location that is not safe or clean, It needs to be closed and revamped and painted as well as inspected by the local police. DO NOT waste your money staying here--It smells!

“Don't stay here”

Staying in Edison for some business and my work booked me in here but after two nights I needed to move. The room overall felt dirty and cheap. Sheets were hard with stains on them. Heating in the room left little to be desired was either two hot or to cold. Fridge in kitchen section of the room kept clicking on at night and waking me up. There always seemed to be activity from the other guests. Didn't feel safe at all.

“Would never stay here again or recommend to anyone”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2008

The hotel matched the star rating but I was very displeased with the service. I travel and stay in hotels at least once a month for my job and can say this is by far the worst experience I have ever had.

The hotel was booked by a colleague of mine who I was on the trip with through hotwire, who charges you at the time of the booking. When getting to the hotel I gave them my credit card to pay for the internet. I was the only one I our party who decided to pay for the internet. When checking out from the hotel we all got print outs of our bills which appeared to show we owed nothing.

About a week after leaving the hotel my card I had given them for the internet was charged $60 twice by the hotel. When I called to ask about this I was told by the front desk clerk that the card hotwire had given them bounced and the remained of what hotwire owed them was charged to my card. I asked why mine was charged since I had nothing to do with hotwire, the booking was not made in my name, and I had not authorized any additional charges on the card (I only signed for internet) They had no good explanation and told me to call hotwire, who of course told me to call the hotel back as they would be the ones who needed to refund me. When calling the hotel back they said they had credited me but actually charged me again for a third time!!! I was very irritated by this point and starting to get upset as this was my bank card I had used and they were taking money out of my checking account! The desk clerk rudely told me to stop getting upset and that she wasn’t going to help me if I didn’t stop. This of course made me even more upset and I asked to speak with her supervisor. He told me they would have to get the money from hotwire before they could credit my account! He asked for the booking number, which I didn’t have on me since I didn’t make the booking. When I told him this and asked him if I could give him a call back I was told by him that it was 6:00 there and he was supposed to be off an hour ago so I could just call back in the morning!!! I couldn’t believe how rude and inconsiderate they were being considering none of this was my doing and I hadn’t authorized any charges!!! I called him back the next morning and a couple of days later it was finally taken care of and I was refunded the 3 charges they had made but I couldn’t believe how un-helpful and rude everyone I talked to (including the manager) was at this hotel. I would never recommend it to anyone and would never stay here again no matter what. I also have not stayed at an ESA since if this is the kind of customer service they are promoting.

“Keep Driving!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2008

My mother and I stopped at this hotel while making the Christmas drive from Raleigh, NC to Boston, MA.

The Extended StayAmerica Edison-Raritan Center is had worn rugs, fluorescent lights and a old-smoke smell. Our room had a broken recliner, furniture with peeling laminate, torn sheets, and a big wad of blue gum stuck to the windowsill. What it didn't have - soap, shampoo, a hairdryer, or a single clothes hanger in the closet.

The night staff was uninterested in customer service. The morning staff was nice.

If it hadn't been so late, we would've tried for another hotel. As it was, we were exhausted. We checked the matresses for obvious signs of bugs (none) and then sucked it up and slept fine. Still, I've never stayed at such a dumpy place and will not visit again.

  • Liked — That it was close to the highway and I could leave quickly.
  • Disliked — Everything else. Seriously - it should be illegal to rent out a room with broken furniture and torn sheets.
