“Sounds a lot better than it is.”

Best thing: friendly check in.
Stupid omissions:
--Coffee, yes. Cups? No. Nor sugar, creamer etc. Dumb.
--Advertises a kitchen. Fridge, microwave, stove? Yup. Plates, silverware? Nope. Dumber.
--Oh, you want more than one packet of coffee? Sure! It's a buck in the vending machine. And this assumes you found your own mug.
--Careworn, well, OK. It's not the Ritz. But it's also not very thoughtful. Part of the property's Creed, displayed properly on the wall, 'Treat others as you would be treated'. I guess the staff and managers eat with their hands and slurp coffee directly from the pot.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the Sheraton.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at Extended Stay America Edison - Raritan Center. Given our company's commitment to superior guest satisfaction, I was disheartened to read that your stay wasn't 100% satisfactory. Please understand how truly sorry I am.

The experience you described is truly regrettable. We strive to ensure that our guests have an exceptional stay. As this hotel’s manager, I can assure you that I have brought each of the issues you expressed to the attention of our staff.

We know that we didn’t get to be a member of America’s number one family of extended stay hotels over night; we did it by focusing on one customer at a time. We know that a totally satisfied customer is one who will come back and stay with us again. That is why we take your review so seriously. It reminds us that despite all of the regular praise we receive, we still have room to improve.

Although it is unusual for a guest to have the experience you did while staying with us, we would like to use your account to help us make our hotel even better. Again, I am deeply sorry that you did not have a completely enjoyable stay at our hotel, and I promise that we are focused on total guest satisfaction every day. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me at this hotel or to our guest relations team directly by visiting our website and clicking the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page. I do hope that you will let me demonstrate our redoubled efforts in the future here or at any of Extended Stay Hotels(sm)' other locations throughout the U.S. and in Canada.

“I'd rather live in my car”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2010

Overall, it sucks.

The rooms are barely maintained; our sink drain looked like it was about to separate from the sink, I was afraid to so much as drop my toothbrush in the sink for fear it would break the drain right off. The heater blew cold air non-stop, we couldn't turn it off, and we couldn't get it fixed because we were gone all day.

The lone maintenance person works just 8-4, and they won't enter the room when you're not there if you have a pet (which we do), and they offer no alternative scheduling for those guests (like us) that are there for work and aren't in the room during the work day. So nothing gets fixed for us.

Housekeeping was also terrible. Because we had a pet, we made arrangements to have our room 'cleaned' on Saturdays because we would either not be there, or be able to remove our pet to allow the staff to come in. Since paying for a housekeeping option is 'required' we expected this arrangement to be met weekly. Well, unless we specifically reminded the front desk that our room could be serviced over the weekend, it didn't get done. Yet we were still charged. So we had to deal with getting these charged removed every time they didn't come into the room. And housekeeping consists solely of swapping out towels, and stealing our own store-bought bathroom tissue. We bought out own because the stuff they provided was so cheap.

We had other random charges show up on our credit card more than once. We would be able to eventually get them all removed, but we were NEVER given a reason for the charges, no matter how many times we asked for an explanation. We'll be watching our credit cards for several weeks after leaving to make sure there are no other fraudulent charges from them.

None of the staff seem to know what's going on, how to address any issue, etc. Ever. If you want an answer to anything, you have to wait until the manager is on site. Most of them don't speak English anyway. One man in particular was especially not helpful - the really short older man. He was always outside talking with friends, and would always ask you to call back when he was at the front desk. And he was rude.

The internet was horrible, it constantly went out, was extremely slow, or just didn't have access even when you're connected to it. Calling it high-speed is a flat out lie. And you have to pay extra for it.

Bed bugs were an issue while we were there. So was guests smoking more than just cigaretts, in the hallways and their rooms. We had to run the vent in the bathroom almost non-stop to try to keep the odor out of our room.

The young lady that works the desk on Sunday night was the only helpful person in the whole place. She would do anything she could do for you, and she was always very pleasant.

We will be returning to this area soon. We'll be staying elsewhere.

“Wasn't the worst place on the planet however,”

I needed a place to stay very close to Staten Island as my plan to stay with a friend for the night fell through. Traveling with a dog that weighs 100 pound can put a damper on any emergency hotel plans. I needed to find a pet friendly hotel, quick! So after checking on the internet, my only option was Extended Stay, Edison-Raritan. When I called the desk person was a bit curt, and didn't seem to know much of anything. Upon arriving to a completely full parking lot, which was dingy and dark, I noticed a few seedy types outside. Upon entering the dingy, dark tiny lobby the curt woman appeared. She complained about having to work the night shift.and was bothered by me asking for a room. She made it so obvious that she was doing me a favor by doing her job. Observing allot of people coming and going through the lobby, I was a bit concerned. The people that were coming and going through the lobby were not guests of the hotel and were there to visit guests. Hummm, makes sense being there was a full parking lot. I questioned my decision to stay there. I wanted a shower and a bed! I was charged the $25.00 fee for having my dog, which I really wasn't too thrilled about, but I was in a bind and really had no choice. My bill for one night stay came to $138.00. I also had to pay extra for the internet service. That pissed me off!. After driving over 9 hours with the dog, spending the day on Staten Island in 95 degree temperatures, I was cooked. Upon entering my room all I wanted was a shower and a bed. Turned to double lock the door and realized there was no additional lock. I was going to go back downstairs and ask for a different room, but going back down meant taking the dog and having to deal with Ms. Curt again. I was a bit surprised when I saw the room was decent. Didn't smell or wasn't noticeably dirty. The bed seemed comfortable, and the pillows were decent. The air conditioner worked okay, but it seemed low and high were the same speed, so it took a while for the room to cool off. Yay! A coffee pot in the room! I decided to make myself a cup of coffee and relax with my dog. The coffee pot didn't work, so I fiddled with it a bit and got it to work although it did leak some grimy water from the bottom of the machine. Got right on the internet with no difficulties. Well, it should be that way being I had to pay for it. The toilet also ran and ran till I had to fiddle with the handle to make it stop. So far, so good. The shower was great and I got a good nights sleep. In the morning, I made some more coffee and took the dog out. The day (morning staff) were very welcoming and friendly. Completely different from the night shift. There were a few people coming and going at that time and the parking lot seemed empty. I am convinced that this is a party all night place to stay. Someone gets the room and then its ON! I wasn't really concerned about safety. I have a huge "trained" dog and take care of my own personal security. I will have to be making monthly trips back to Staten Island and need a place to stay for one night. I will try not to stay here because of the expense. I found them to be outrageously priced for really nothing to write home about. If you are not in a bind, don't have a pet, and have the means, don't stay here. There are many other hotels which offer much much more at the same or cheaper rate.

“This place is a Dump and UNSafe”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2010

Do not stay at this DUMP. While staying with 40 high school students on a business trip we had to witness an NYPD Drug Bust. The rooms smell, the place attracts seedy people and the place smells of POT! Hence the drug BUST. The hotel staff could care less. One of rooms we checked into had cat pee on the bed and cigarette butts on the floor. The walls are paper thin and the place is loud all night. People constantly moving in and out all night. DO NOT bring young children or teenagers to the hotel, it is unsafe and I beleive the hotel staff knows and ignores these problems. This is a drug infested location that is not safe or clean, It needs to be closed and revamped and painted as well as inspected by the local police. DO NOT waste your money staying here--It smells!

“Don't stay here”

Staying in Edison for some business and my work booked me in here but after two nights I needed to move. The room overall felt dirty and cheap. Sheets were hard with stains on them. Heating in the room left little to be desired was either two hot or to cold. Fridge in kitchen section of the room kept clicking on at night and waking me up. There always seemed to be activity from the other guests. Didn't feel safe at all.
