“Cottage: Ammenties a plethora but clean the bathroom!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2009

Lots of ammenities offered with this B&B to include: close proximity to town square "Mall", horse and carriage rides, tourist booth; relatively close proximity to beach (we're young without kids so walking/bike riding wasn't an issue); on-site dining (dinner - which we didn't have time for and breakfast which we thought was lovely); on-site parking (free for Cottage); and large bed room, 1.5 baths, kitchen, and living room.

The innkeepers were very helpful and friendly to us, though at the end of our stay, didn't ask whether or not we enjoyed ourselves. This is a personal preference and isn't a requirement in my books, but I thought it odd that they were so personal otherwise.

The two complaints I have about the Cottage (a) the plastic is still on the mattress which makes noises everytime you turn. If keeping it is a requirement, a heavier matress pad should be put on to dampen the noise. (b) the main bathroom shower was not cleaned properly. There was residual long hair on the wall and the curtain contained mildew. For people with breathing problems, this is huge.

Provided these two issues are addressed in the future, I would return.

“Authentic Victorian inn...a genteel experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2009

My wife and I decided to spend one night in Cape May over the Labor Day weekend. Alexanders' was recommended by another inn which was booked up.

It was a good choice. Larry, the innkeeper, was gracious over the phone. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and left on Sunday. We had the Green Room....which an earlier reviewer called "musty." We experienced no such thing. The room was clean, cooled with an air conditioning unit; the bed was a bit solid, and not as comfortable as we might like, but that's a personal preference. We enjoyed the room thoroughly, keeping in mind that the private bathroom is an add-on, thus taking away from the total square footage. The shower is right out of a cruise ship...that is to say, small. However, there are very nice touches such as soap and shampoo made especially for the Inn; it's not the small cakes of industrial soap you might expect at inns elsewhere.

We arrived in time for afternoon tea; it's nothing fancy, mind you. Tea and coffee are set out along with some cookies and petit pastries. It's a nice touch, however.

There are many things to recommend about Alexanders', even though one might sound a bit negative. The inn has a wonderful, genteel shabbiness about it, from its use throughout of authentic antiques. There aren't any reproductions of Victorian couches that I could see...the ones at Alexanders' are the real thing. Our armoire and furniture in our room were antiques, from top to bottom. Yes, there are other B&Bs throughout Cape May which feel more modern even though they have antique reproductions...but there's something about being in an atmosphere that's truly authentic. Sitting in the parlor is relaxing in and of itself...the piano room is next door. And taking in a breezy afternoon on the wrap-around porch was a great treat.

If you're looking for a B&B that's right on the beach, Alexanders' is not for you. It's a short, three-or-four block walk to the beach, however, and beach tags are included in the room rental. The inn is one block away from the Cape May pedestrian mall, which comes alive in the evening, once everyone clears the beach. It's also located precisely between city hall on your left, and the fire station on your right. Saying it's "centrally located" is an understatement.

We received an unanticipated treat when we were told that Sunday morning brunch was included in the price. The five-course meal was excellent; keep in mind that they count coffee as a course. I had Eggs Benedict, with a crab cake replacing the Canadian bacon. Very, very, very well worth it. My wife had the sausage-nut strudel, which she also loved. Alexanders' also serves a full dinner six nights a week; be aware that it's a gourmet dinner, which means gourmet prices, but it's received superb reviews. We didn't take advantage, choosing another restaurant instead.

We found the ambiance and the graciousness of Larry, his wife and the other staff to be superb, and we'd go back. Wanting to make sure there would be no problems after reading some of the earlier reviews, I wore my TripAdvisor.com ballcap to send a oh-so-subtle signal. I needn't have worried: every guest I saw at the hotel received the same excellent level of service, and everyone seemed very pleased with their stay.

“Wonderful experience - great service, delicious food, incredibly sweet hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2009

My two girlfriends and I came for a reunion/girlie weekend and we LOVED this place. Larry, the host, was so sweet and accommodating--made sure we had extra towels, robes, printed out boarding passes, gave great restaurant recommendations. Just overall very warm and sweet service. The food (Zagat rated restaurant and James Beard award-winning chef!) was AMAZING. Ridiculously ample breakfasts and Sunday brunch was included in our stay and simply world class. (Get the sausage and nut strudel--amazing!) One block away from pedestrian mall and a short walk to beach. Huge, shaded, wrap-around veranda with cozy rocking chairs, perfect for pre- or post-dinner drinks. Couldn't have been happier. Highly recommended.

“Staind Sheets, Staind Carpet, Musty Towels”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2009

I paid $370 to stay at the Alexander’s Inn bed and breakfast. First, upon entering the room we found a stained carpet and a room that was old and dated (not historic old). Then we pulled back the comforter and noticed stains all over the sheets. We then called the inn keeper Larry who apologized and began changing the sheets. We went for a walk and when we return I washed my face only to find all of the towels had a fowl musty smell. It was at this time we concluded that we would not spend the night in this dump. The inn keeper indicated the in 30 years he had never had a single complaint and refunded only half of the amount. Upon further discussion he mentioned that they generally use this room for parents who want their children in a separate room. I stated that had I been told that upfront that this was a sub par room I would have never stayed at his place. I feel and apology and a full refund where due.

“Most beautiful porch in Cape May”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2009

We have stayed in 10 of the top b&bs in Cape May in the last 4 years, and this has the most beautiful porch and some of the best food. You are served Diane's innovative breakfast at your own table on this lovely porch (weather permitting) and are thankful there is no egg casserole here! The rooms are full Victorian, but spacious (and where else are you going to have a chandelier over your bed? Silver Room). The room staff is a local adult, not an overseas teen. Larry and Diane have been instrumental in starting the whole Cape May renaissance, and can tell you anything about the history of Cape May. The Inn is on Washington just steps from the mall, but quiet and shady. Parking is across the street. (See also my separate review of the restaurant)
