“I'll Try to Be Fair”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2010

I have waited 3 months to write this to be fair but this really is POOR Richard's Inn. Guests should be warned that it is a 2 mile walk to where they have to park their car. The inn sits right next to the Mad Batter Restaurant which meant, every night in my room with the air conditioner on, until 11:00 or after, I had to breath in the fumes they were putting out which was pretty gross. Oh and the yellow self stick-up notes all over the place was totally hysterical ("Don't Do This - Please Don't Do That"). The coffee from those old cafeteria like urns tasted so burnt that you really didn't want 2 cups (it was just greasy and yucky). Wicker baskets nailed to the bathroom wall used as soap dishes - really. One day I wanted to sit in the back yard to get away from the foot & car traffic and OMG what a pig sty. Fake green vines hanging on the gate no-way (its not Staten Island its Cape May). I felt sorry for the gentleman who lived next door that had a meticulously landscaped and manicured home & lawn because of the neglected plots at POOR Richards. The furnishings inside are just old garage sale junk items thrown together that aren't even refinished to look nice they are just thrown together. There is no comfortable parlor to sit in to relax just a dining table and a couple of benchs. I'm sorry this was just not a relaxing B&B to stay at and definetly way overpriced.

If my parking lot was two miles away this guest would have been half-way to Wildwood - and that said, you may judge that everything else mentioned by this person was also grossly exaggerated. I'm clearly too casual a place for some people and do make the effort on my site to be very clear about what it is like here. Unfortunately some people prefer to pay for the economical room ( I am one of the lowest in town) but demand the upscale amenities and then -not complain to the owner - but moan on trip advisor. And when you work 24/7 to provide hospitality in your home, it's quite hurtful. I will not mention this person by name but she also managed to fight with a few guests at breakfast, which has never happened before. Fortunately, I have a healthy business of wonderful guests who love it here.

“I would never stay anywhere else in Cape May”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

We have been coming to Cape May and staying at Poor
Richard's Inn for 11 years. It is truly a home away from home --great breakfasts! Harriet is a master at making quiche and there are always plenty of choices of amazing breads from Cape May Bakers, fresh fruit, and wonderful conversations with the other guests. The ambience is eclectically Victorian with original artwork adorning every possible wall space. Harriet is an artist and it is evident in every part of this charming place, on an historic street 2 blks from the ocean -- it just doesn't get any better than this for a fantastic deal and time .

“Comfortable, relaxing, and warm, like staying at grandma's house at the Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

Great location, half a block from the beach and one block from downtown. Lots of restaurants and shopping and sightseeing within walking distance . Harriett and Craig were great hostesses they made sure you were comfortable and had everything you needed for a wonderful stay. We are looking forward to visiting again next year.

“Great location great price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

Harriet was a great innkeeper. This is a nice quaint place to stay on jackson street right in the center of town. Our room was a bit small but hey we spent most of our time on the beach or roaming around town just having fun. We will stay there again.

“Nice, basic inn. Served its purpose.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

My wife and I stayed at Poor Richard's this past weekend for a quick getaway. When booking a B&B, we were kind of constrained due to two factors. 1. We booked only one week in advance, and 2. We only stayed one night (Saturday). So I had to call about a dozen places before I found one that had an open room for just Sat night. Many of the Cape May B&Bs are 2 or even 3 night minimum stays.

We checked in around 5PM on Saturday, even though official check-in time is nice and early - 1:00. Harriet, the innkeeper, is super nice and personable. She makes you feel right at home and makes sure you are comfortable. She takes a lot of pride in Poor Richard's.

We had a room (#6) with a double bed and a twin. The room was plenty big for the two of us, but would be tight with kids. It was hot this weekend (about 90), but the air conditioner in the room worked like a charm. The room was plenty cold for sleeping.

Breakfast was pretty standard. It's a continental, so no hot food. Bagels, breads, fruit, coffee, juice. As a B&B, we thought Harriet could have focused a little more on the second B. She has a full kitchen in the back so there is the potential for a proper breakfast. I wouldn't mind paying an extra couple dollars on the rack rate for some eggs or pancakes.

We checked out at 10:30, but Harriet told us we could use her beach chairs, towels, and outdoor shower for the remainder of the day. We took advantage of this and spent the day at the beach and then showered around 5:00 in the outdoor shower. This was very accommodating of her and was really key for us to have a "home-base" during the day after checking out.

Overall, this was a basic inn. It's not that fancy, not too big, the porch is a little small, the breakfast is just OK, but the rate was good compared to other B&Bs in Cape May in June (we pd $160). So it served its purpose for us. Would we stay here again? Next time I will do some more planning, book in advance, and probably find another place for a few more bucks. Absolutely nothing against Poor Richard's or Harriet - it's just a matter of you get what you pay for here. A good value for sure.
