“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

This Is our third consecutive year staying at Poor Richard's Inn for our annual Cape May Vacation. We have had accommodations in two different rooms and both have been very clean and nicely appointed. Park your car and forget it. The location is fantastic! The breakfasts are varied and quite satisfying. Lovely porches for relaxing. The innkeeper, Harriet, is friendly and very helpful. Her team of staff are also very nice. We feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed in this wonderful B&B. We plan to return again!

My sister and I went to Cape May to attend our nephew's graduation from the US Coast Guard Boot Camp. At the very last minute our elderly aunt decided she would accompany us. I called Harriet and she couldn't have been nicer about adding her to our reservation. She helped us so much in getting around Cape May and making sure that we got to the ceremony on time! Our aunt really enjoyed sitting on the front porch and watching the passers-by. She picked up a book in her room and Harriet offered to let her keep it so she could finish reading it when she returned home. The Inn is immaculate and charming. The breakfast was quite good; fresh fruit, wonderful quiche and home made breads and muffins. The location is fantastic...just a half block from the beach and a block from the pedistrian area. The parking was free and only a few blocks from the Inn. We throughly enjoyed our time there and if we are ever in Cape May again, we will happily stay at Poor Richard's.

“A Wonderful Home Away from Home at the Beach!”

I just returned from a visit to Cape May where, for the third summer in a row, I stayed at Poor Richard's Inn. If Harriett Sossen has a room available, her inn will always be my choice when visiting Cape May. Harriett makes you feel so at home and goes out of her way to provide for the needs of her guests. By the time you leave, you feel like you are leaving a friend's home. Rooms are very nice and comfortable without being so fussy that you feel that you can't sit on the furniture...just what you want at the beach. Whether relaxing with a book on the second floor balcony which has a view of the ocean and wonderful ocean breezes, or enjoying Harriett's breakfast while chatting with other guests, a stay ay Poor Richard's is a delight. The parking for the hotel is a few blocks away (not two miles as another guest stated), but there is an unloading area in front of the Inn and Harritt's Inn is so well located that restaurants and shops are all within easy walking distance. I highly recommend Poor Richard's to anyone who comes to the beach to relax and enjoy. Oh, and did I mention that the room price is very reasonable?

“I would never stay anywhere else”

Poor Richard's was recommended several years aago & it is now the only place that I will stay when I go to Cape May. Harriet is a wonderful hostess and her place feels like home. Her artwork fills the walls, her rooms are all decorated in a comfortable Victorian style, and the general atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable. Harriet provides a delicious array of foods for breakfast every morning to get your day started. The inn in just 1 block from the beach & within easy walking distance of shops and restaurtants. I think that she has the perfect location - you just park your car upon arrival and there is no need to use it again unless you are leaving the area. The porches are also perfect for reading, people watching or having a cool drink. She and her team have always made my stay special & she is very accomadating. I always enjoy my stay & will continue to recommend Poor Richard's to friends & coworkers. Kudos to Harriet & her team!

“I'll Try to Be Fair”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2010

I have waited 3 months to write this to be fair but this really is POOR Richard's Inn. Guests should be warned that it is a 2 mile walk to where they have to park their car. The inn sits right next to the Mad Batter Restaurant which meant, every night in my room with the air conditioner on, until 11:00 or after, I had to breath in the fumes they were putting out which was pretty gross. Oh and the yellow self stick-up notes all over the place was totally hysterical ("Don't Do This - Please Don't Do That"). The coffee from those old cafeteria like urns tasted so burnt that you really didn't want 2 cups (it was just greasy and yucky). Wicker baskets nailed to the bathroom wall used as soap dishes - really. One day I wanted to sit in the back yard to get away from the foot & car traffic and OMG what a pig sty. Fake green vines hanging on the gate no-way (its not Staten Island its Cape May). I felt sorry for the gentleman who lived next door that had a meticulously landscaped and manicured home & lawn because of the neglected plots at POOR Richards. The furnishings inside are just old garage sale junk items thrown together that aren't even refinished to look nice they are just thrown together. There is no comfortable parlor to sit in to relax just a dining table and a couple of benchs. I'm sorry this was just not a relaxing B&B to stay at and definetly way overpriced.

If my parking lot was two miles away this guest would have been half-way to Wildwood - and that said, you may judge that everything else mentioned by this person was also grossly exaggerated. I'm clearly too casual a place for some people and do make the effort on my site to be very clear about what it is like here. Unfortunately some people prefer to pay for the economical room ( I am one of the lowest in town) but demand the upscale amenities and then -not complain to the owner - but moan on trip advisor. And when you work 24/7 to provide hospitality in your home, it's quite hurtful. I will not mention this person by name but she also managed to fight with a few guests at breakfast, which has never happened before. Fortunately, I have a healthy business of wonderful guests who love it here.
