I’ve been enjoying R&R in Cape May for 30 years and have stayed in a variety of accommodations, including apartment rentals, B&B’s, and motels. Always wanted to try the Avondale because of its killer location and balconies, and after reading all the TA reviews, we booked four nights in August. They were very helpful with our booking. And we were extremely lucky in having picked the best weather of the entire month!
We stayed on the 3d floor. Loved the comfy rocking chairs on the balcony, delighted with our clean suite, and found the staff to be helpful throughout our stay. All the stairs (no elevator) actually helped my knees, having just come off a physical therapy regimen.
Bagels, donuts, cereal, juice made for a nice enough breakfast bar. However, I think it starts rather late and would like to see them add fresh fruit - a bowl of oranges and bananas. I stocked my own soy milk in the very handy fridge. Be sure to crank your fridge up as soon as you arrive, to get maximum cooling quickly, then you can turn it down.
Our living room fan pull broke and they fixed it immediately.
I suggested they consider mattress toppers or replacements – this was literally the worst mattress I’ve ever slept on – punishingly hard and flat, not just “firm.” And the pillows were equally unforgiving dense foam. Thus, I'd rate low for sleep quality. But this is a matter of personal preference, and as you read through reviews you see many guests are fine with the beds/pillows.
They don’t offer a coffee pot in the room - another detail I’d love to see them address, so guests enjoy their stay even more. If not individual coffeemakers in rooms, then at least offer coffee at 7 a.m. in the lobby before the full breakfast bar opens at 8. In Cape May many people rise early, so I had to go for my coffee at Avalon across the street. Great coffee there, but the cost adds up – and not being a habitué of coffee shops, I didn’t realize you get a refill cheaper than buying a whole new 2nd cup. I learned the hard way! The other reason I mention this is that I was surprised by having to exit from the bedroom, not from the living room side of the suite, and in doing so I let light into the bedroom where my hubbie was still sleeping.
We both found the living room warmish because it doesn’t have its own a/c – rather, it relies on the overhead fan and through-room vent for cooling from the bedroom. Hubbie knew to turn that on; some might not know to do this. And some might find the living room temp too warm for sleeping even with the fan/through-room, so know before you go. Having the living room was great – worth the extra cost. The table and chairs were useful and of course the view was just what you want from a beach-side motel.
The bathroom was clean – a top priority, with great shower pressure. Caveat: if you are a large person you might feel uncomfortable with the pointy counter that’s very close to the shower and commode. In fact, I was afraid I’d hurt myself using the john in the middle of the night, and I’m not portly. This is a poor and unnecessary counter design; perhaps they’ll consider changing it in the future. Our suite had a sink in the bedroom – nice touch!
All in all, the Avondale is a wonderfully situated and well-managed motel in Cape May, making the price a fair one. We would love to return.
