“Best spot in Cape May”

We stayed at the Avondale on the recommendation of long time customers and absolutely LOVED it. The rooms are super clean, spacious and comfortable. The staff is extremely friendly and accomodating. The location is directly across the street from the beach and you can sit and watch the dolphins play as you sip your coffee. Can't wait to go back :)

The staff were very accomodating and friendly. Centrally located -great location.

Breakfast was very good but 8 is a bit late to start breakfast; that caused a bit of a crowd since everyone was waiting for the door to open.

“First stay at Avondale - now 1st choice!”

We returned to C.M. after a 10 year absence. After reading positive reviews on Avondale we booked our mid September visit (4 nights) here and were completely satisfied. We had a hotel room on the 3rd floor, great view, double bed, wide screen TV, table, 3 chairs, fridg., hair drier, very clean. We enjoyed the rocking chairs on the porch, the ice machine was nearby on the 2nd landing. Location is the best, the pool is nice sized and appears to be well maintained, the complimentary breakfast will get you off to a good start of your day. Either our next door neighbors were very quiet or the walls were designed to reduce noise transfer - all was quiet on this beach front! The maid service was very quick efficient and inobstrusive.
Aleatheas Restaurant ( great early seating menu value) is next door on the south side and there is a pizza shop & coffee & bagels across the street on the on the north side. Never had a problem finding a parking stall.
Yes, as has often been cited, no elevator, so take that into consideration. The matresses are firm, but that was to our liking.
Finally, we found the manager to be uniquely personable and helpful. We enjoyed having several conversations with him & his family. We will return to Cape May and Avondale by the Sea!

“Fabulous location, great staff - would come again”

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in late August. We booked at the last minute and were able to get a 2-room suite with a king bed in one room and a pull-out sofa in the 2nd room. (Since Hurricane Irene had just passed, we were able to take advantage of last minute cancellations.) Normally our teenage son hates pull-out sofas, but the hotel advised us that they had just replaced all the sleep sofa mattresses in the hotel with Tempur-Pedic mattresses. Our son was happy and slept well. Our bed was comfortable as well. The room had a small refrigerator and 2 sinks. The hotel also has a small outdoor swimming pool (we didn't use it). Morning breakfast, consisting of good, fresh bagels and donuts, cereal, coffee and juice was provided. It was basic but did the job and was included in the price - we were happy.

This was our first time in Cape May, NJ (we usually go to Ocean City, NJ). The town itself is just lovely, and this hotel had the perfect location - right across the street from the ocean, two walks from the historic district, with plenty of restaurants within walking distance. It was also quiet and peaceful at night (most rooms have a porch with 2 rocking chairs, so you can sit outside and relax).

If you are looking for the perfect location, you can't do better than the Avondale. If you are looking for an elegant stay with plush bedding and decor, however, you would be better off staying in one of the many Victorian bed and breakfast places we saw on our walks. The Avondale is in many ways a typical shore motel - somewhat dated and functional decor, but extremely clean and well-maintained, with comfortable beds and no noise, and very gracious staff, so we were perfectly happy.

Room Tip: The hotel has 3 floors and no elevator. If your mobility is limited or you are traveling with small...

“Killer location, well run, great views, solid breakfast but oh those beds!”

I’ve been enjoying R&R in Cape May for 30 years and have stayed in a variety of accommodations, including apartment rentals, B&B’s, and motels. Always wanted to try the Avondale because of its killer location and balconies, and after reading all the TA reviews, we booked four nights in August. They were very helpful with our booking. And we were extremely lucky in having picked the best weather of the entire month!

We stayed on the 3d floor. Loved the comfy rocking chairs on the balcony, delighted with our clean suite, and found the staff to be helpful throughout our stay. All the stairs (no elevator) actually helped my knees, having just come off a physical therapy regimen.

Bagels, donuts, cereal, juice made for a nice enough breakfast bar. However, I think it starts rather late and would like to see them add fresh fruit - a bowl of oranges and bananas. I stocked my own soy milk in the very handy fridge. Be sure to crank your fridge up as soon as you arrive, to get maximum cooling quickly, then you can turn it down.

Our living room fan pull broke and they fixed it immediately.

I suggested they consider mattress toppers or replacements – this was literally the worst mattress I’ve ever slept on – punishingly hard and flat, not just “firm.” And the pillows were equally unforgiving dense foam. Thus, I'd rate low for sleep quality. But this is a matter of personal preference, and as you read through reviews you see many guests are fine with the beds/pillows.

They don’t offer a coffee pot in the room - another detail I’d love to see them address, so guests enjoy their stay even more. If not individual coffeemakers in rooms, then at least offer coffee at 7 a.m. in the lobby before the full breakfast bar opens at 8. In Cape May many people rise early, so I had to go for my coffee at Avalon across the street. Great coffee there, but the cost adds up – and not being a habitué of coffee shops, I didn’t realize you get a refill cheaper than buying a whole new 2nd cup. I learned the hard way! The other reason I mention this is that I was surprised by having to exit from the bedroom, not from the living room side of the suite, and in doing so I let light into the bedroom where my hubbie was still sleeping.

We both found the living room warmish because it doesn’t have its own a/c – rather, it relies on the overhead fan and through-room vent for cooling from the bedroom. Hubbie knew to turn that on; some might not know to do this. And some might find the living room temp too warm for sleeping even with the fan/through-room, so know before you go. Having the living room was great – worth the extra cost. The table and chairs were useful and of course the view was just what you want from a beach-side motel.

The bathroom was clean – a top priority, with great shower pressure. Caveat: if you are a large person you might feel uncomfortable with the pointy counter that’s very close to the shower and commode. In fact, I was afraid I’d hurt myself using the john in the middle of the night, and I’m not portly. This is a poor and unnecessary counter design; perhaps they’ll consider changing it in the future. Our suite had a sink in the bedroom – nice touch!

All in all, the Avondale is a wonderfully situated and well-managed motel in Cape May, making the price a fair one. We would love to return.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 309 which had a balcony that was "private" in that no one walks by your...
