My wife booked the Windward House for an October weekend stay back in the summer. We try to hit a Bed & Breakfast in Cape May at least once a year and this time we were able to actually stay on Jackson Street...one of our favorites in the Cape.
We booked the Renaissance Room...which is right on the first floor in the front of the house. We were aware of any of the "downsides" others had mentioned...the perceived lack of privacy, et all....but no worries! It was beautifully decorated...privacy curtains & windows...and outside of seeing a little light from the porch once in a while...our sleep was uninterrupted! We wanted to wake up every day for the breakfast, but if we slept a little later...we really did not hear any loud noises.
Traffic hit and we wound up arriving later than expected...but they were very accommodating, and made sure that we were full with breakfast the next day before finishing check in, payment, and getting us everything we would need for our stay. Staff and owners were always helpful when needed...courteous and attentive. Felt like we were being welcomed into someone's home! The breakfasts, while maybe not the best we have ever had, were very tasty as well as filling...and made with love. From cheesy croissants to pecan french toast...everything was flavorful and we had very little room for lunches later on!
While my wife was a little disappointed in the lack of a tea time...they always had tea, coffee, cookies...etc...available for guests. Perfect for some relaxation on the porch before dinner or dancing. The house is decorated in full Victorian...with an interesting collection of stained glass! Spend some time exploring the house if you can with the owners...it is a beautiful old home. Our room was smaller...but the first floor location is great and you barely spend time in it anyway. (although I did catch a few minutes of football in between showers and changing!) Room was clean and the bed was comfy. Lots of pillows to choose from.
Location is great too...right in the historic district...in walking distance to the beach, many restaurants, and the Washington Street mall. The parking lot is a little far away...we did not mind since walking Cape May is great...but it might bother some. A thank you to Cheryl...who took care of our room and breakfasts during our stay. She was very helpful and made sure were comfortable the whole time...and answered all of our questions with a smile.
Always sad to leave Cape May but will definitely consider coming back to the Windward House on our next trip. Friendly staff, tasty breakfast, great location, and charming!
