“Governor's House is excellent!”

We arrived on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 and were greeted by Bob Chafee proprietor. Bob welcomed us into his beautifully decorated historic home. We stayed in the Captain's room, luxuriously laden with amenties including wine and chocolates. Bob and his wife Barbara prepared a delicious continental breakfast each morning of our stay. It was the perfect getaway! We strongly recommend this Inn to anyone planning a trip to Portsmouth.

Room Tip: Book early and ask for a room with a whirlpool tub.

“We want your job!”

We loved your Inn and it met the expectations for my wife and I completely. We consider ourselves "hotel people" but wanted to make this weekend special. We left our vacation with you envious of your location and the how much you enjoy what you do.
It was a pleasure meeting you both and we appreciated the privacy and all the suggestions you had for some great places to go in Portsmouth. I doubt we would have found on our own.
The Inn is well decorated and cared for and no detail was missed in making us feel comfortable.
We would stay here again over any other place we found in the area.

“We keep coming back, and back, and back...”

The Governor's House has become like that favorite dish you just have to order every time because even though you believe in the concept of variety, you know you'll be disappointed if you have everything else. So it was earlier this week when my wife and I stayed in the Governor's House. The house itself epitomizes New England charm, and it's located within walking distance of town, it has basically every academy award winning movie ever made, and the innkeeper, Bob, is about as warm as they come.

Room Tip: I think we've stayed in every room at this point, and we've loved them all.

“Perfect Bed and Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

I can not say enough good things about our stay at the Governor's House. It is meticulously claen with a lot of attention to detail. The fresh flowers, chocolates, nuts ,wine, chocolate chip cookies, mini fridge in the room and friendly atmosphere made this a home away from home.We would definitely return

Room Tip: We stayed in the romantic Prescott room with a jacuzzi tub.

“Couldn't even get as far as a reservation!”

I'm as a reasonable guy as the next and have traveled a lot and stayed at several places around the world. With excitement and anticipation my wife and I wanted to reserve one of the rooms based on the raving reviews we saw. To our disappointment and amazement, we tried to simply call based on the 2 phone numbers displayed on their website - no answer and both went to a different phone number and unidentifiable voice mail. I left a message at this unknown voice mail extension to not receive a call back within 24 hours.

I'm sorry but it's 2011 and if I can't even call and reach a human being and the very least get a returned call, despite the reviews, I have to say that is terrible and I'll go some place else. If the numbers are wrong- then please update your website. I have simple requests in life and being able to reach an establishment that I plan to spend over $200 to stay at is what I would call, I don't know - common courtesy.

I’m very sorry to hear that “New England Traveler” could not get through to the Governor’s House during a brief technical problem with our phone service, (our email and our web-based reservations were functioning properly.)

This is especially troubling to us as we are very committed to providing 1st class customer service. We are very proud of the fact that the Governor’s House is the only B&B or inn in southern NH named a “Fodor’s Choice” by Fodor’s Travel Guide, and was named “Best Village Inn in New England” by Boston Magazine.

Again, we sincerely apologize to “New England Traveler” for being a source of frustration and inconvenience, and hope he will consider a visit to the Governor’s House in the future.
