“Renovation was not enough!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

I have been a member of the Holiday Inn Express pool membership at this building for over ten years ( at one time it was a Days Inn) I now go to this hotel to exercise in the pool at least bi-weekly. During this time I have seen the low and highs of the maintance / housekeeping personel at this hotel. Being local I can see it more than the average person staying in the room. The staff is nice, and the renovation of 2010 thru March 2011 is impressive. However, if the staff do not maintain the property to what benefit? Much time and effort was spent painting and renovating the pool/hot tub area. But is was like perfuming the pig. The pool water is cloudy, and smelly. The ventilation is not adequate for the pool area. Yesterday morning, and many times a month, I could not even see my feet due to cloudy/dirty water. I feel the "pool guy" is not well trained, cares or even takes pride in maintaining the pool/ hot tub area. But worse is the slippery feeling on the side of the pool, yucky. The white tile/coping around the pool is so stain with black algea, because of lack of brushing or scrubbing it just stays there. There are non working fans are not drawing air out of the bathrooms at all. The dirt, standing water, paint peeling in the ladies bathroom is gross. Over the years I have complained to Frank the manager. May I suggest "you" get in the pool on a regular basis and tell me if the water feels and looks refreshing to you. You do not get the full perspective of the pool just standingon the edge looking down..is only half the issue.!!! Oh I won't be renewing my memebership in the spring if this is not corrected. And I read that I can post pictures on the site too. Perhaps it would help to document this problems. Please make you hotel great and take care of the Pool.

I am disappointed that you have had a less than acceptable experience with the hotel and the pool. It's true we did some renovation in the pool area and what was done, we are pleased with. There are numerous variables in pool operation in order for it to be perfect. We are working hard to get all aspects of the pool system to be greatly improved and closer to perfect. I appreciate your comments and we will continue to address the issues you have brought to our attention.

“Very Pleasant Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

We only stayed here for one night, but it was a very nice stay. The woman at check-in was very friendly and got us checked in very quickly. She explained all of the amenities and free breakfast very well. The room was a little small but sufficient for our needs. I thought it was cool to have a mini fridge and microwave right in the room, although we didn't use them.

Our only complaint was that the bed was slightly uncomfortable, and we found our backs to be hurting (probably exacerbated by a very long car drive). Also, the hallway seemed kind of loud, but didn't bother us while sleeping.

The continental breakfast was top notch, the food was very fresh (and you can taste it) and had a nice variety. They also have coffee and juice all day, which I find to be a nice touch. We didn't use any of the amenities, but they have a pool (with hot tub), business center, laundry, and even a small convenience store inside. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend this to anyone.

Also, it can be hard to find. Make sure to use a GPS as opposed to relying on signs. The City of Keene won't allow any signs to help guide you to the hotel. They don't even have a sign for Key Street.

“Keenly Disappointed in Keene”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

This is an older, 2-story property located on a hard-to-find dead-end street. The staff was friendly when I called about late arrival, and had my key ready upon arrival.

We found the hotel to be overpriced for the town and for the amenities provided; this room might have been worth $79 in the rest of the country. The room was somewhat updated, with local Keene photographs. The TV was still an old style one, not a flat-panel like most lodging has today. There was little space in the bathroom's 3-foot wide counter. Plus, there was only warm water the morning we were there, in 35 degree weather.

There was no ice machine on the 2nd floor where our room was located; very inconvenient.

We skipped the complimentary breakfast as the small area with low ceilings was jammed with people. McDonald's provided a better, less crowded breakfast experience than Holiday Inn.

Instructions in the room recommended an online checkout on the TV. I tried it, and it failed, and the process hung for several minutes; so I called front desk to check out, but they never answered. I ended up giving our keys to the front desk clerk as we left, and pointed out that the online checkout did not work; she didn't seem concerned.

In summary, this property was not up to the style and amenity level that we have come to expect from a modern-day Holiday Inn Express. Maybe it was a "Holiday Inn Lite"?

I am sorry you were disappointed with your recent stay. Unfortunately we cannot change our location or, due to local zoning, add additional signage to make us more visible. I would, however to respond to some of the other concerns. In October in the northeast, I would say that most hotels have the highest rates of the year due to the number of reasons why people travel. There is beautiful foliage, numerous community gatherings and festivals, and college events. At the time when you stayed we did not have LCD televisions, but we do now in all rooms. You had an issue with the video checkout function which has now been resolved and working perfectly with the new TVs. When the hotel is full, like it was when you stayed, the breakfast does get very busy. Seating is tight when everyone wants to socialize, but I would say there will never be a shortage of fresh breakfast items that could be taken back to the room to be enjoyed there. If you are back in the area, please come in and try us again. We would love to have you stay with us!

“Great stay with the kids!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

We needed a place to stay in Keene as a base for hiking around the area. We have 2 boys, 10 and 13, so we needed a place that was family friendly. The room was quiet, clean, and comfortable. The pool area was clean and enjoyed by many families. The free breakfast buffet had a good selection, especially for sweet loving children. The pancake maker was a big hit. Cookies in the afternoon were consumed by children and parents hungry after a hike.

“Girls get away wknd”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

I was fortunate to be able to take my two sisters to Keene and we had a lovely girls-get-away. Keene is a wonderful, quaint little community with a town center reminiscent of the fictional town of ‘Mayberry’. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and found it to be delightful. The rooms were spotless, well decorated and very classy. The beds were wonderful and the pillows were the best! The breakfast was perfect with fresh pancakes, made to order, by the push of a button! They were light & delicious. The staff was warm & welcoming. I would highly recommend this hotel. It’s off the beaten path, and I found it to be a great value for the money!
