The Lodge succeeds at being a hotel in size and convenience but with a charming, bed and breakfast atmosphere. We selected this hotel after carefully reading other Tripadvisor reviews. This sounded like a lovely place where we could bring our baby without the glares of other guests in a thin-walled B&B. It turned out to be an excellent choice for us. We adored the warm, crackling fire in the beautiful common room each night. The availability of hot tea, coffee, and hot chocolate at all times was wonderful and welcoming. Also, I would recommend asking to borrow a DVD at the front desk because they have an impressive collection. Our room did look like what you would expect in a standard hotel, but we paid a little extra for a whirlpool tub and fireplace. The fireplace was electric and didn't add much more to the experience than a picture of a fire, but the tub was large and very relaxing. Many others have said that the hotel is very clean and I would concur. Some updates could help, but the dated furniture somehow added to the pleasant ambience. I would also like to note that the hallways have a comforting, Christmas smell like spices and pine needles.
This place had all of the home-like nuances of a bed and breakfast but it was certainly in the breakfast that the Lodge fell short. Other reviewers have remarked on how they enjoyed the food, but our experience was disappointing. Cereal and oatmeal packets were available but the milk had been sitting out a while and it smelled near spoiled. There was a tub of plain Chobani yogurt, a few cinnamon rolls, a very firm seemingly made days ago pound cake, a sort of cheese cake that my husband said was heinous, and some maple bread pudding. The very same partial Chobani appeared the next day for breakfast and it looked as though the leftover bread pudding and pound cake made a reappearance as well. We ended up at the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru on both days. I would also like to mention that they offered disposable utensils that had a shiny finish so they almost looked like real flatware. This was cute until I saw the soapy cup asking that we "recycle" our utensils. Perhaps real flatware might be in order if they want to wash and reuse. Plastic disposable is precisely that, use and dispose.
Our stay was enjoyable enough that we would forgive the unpleasant breakfast and even stay again knowing we would just eat out in the morning. I absolutely would have given 5 stars if the food were palpable. It is possible this was a bad weekend, but I would recommend that others make reservations with an awareness that the breakfast could be unappetizing.
