“Beautiful setting and personal service”

We were very pleased with our experience with Three Chimneys. We held our October wedding there and stayed at the inn multiple times throughout the planning process, and we always found the service to be excellent.

We took over the entire inn for the wedding weekend and our guests all raved about the beautiful rooms. The innkeeper and event staff were very friendly and accommodating, and they did a great job answering my hundreds of questions and trying to meet our special requests. My guests were all impressed by the quaint historical decor; the website doesn't even do it justice. Go see it in person! It was the perfect setting for a fall wedding.

The rooms are clean, spacious, and beautifully appointed; you feel like you are stepping back in time as soon as you set foot inside. This is a small inn in a very historical setting, and it's one of the most unique properties around. As some previous reviewers indicated, there are a few charming quirks (higher beds, creaky floors) that come with any such property, but it is well worth it for the setting and personal service you get.

The inn overlooks the Oyster River and has a lovely garden and outdoor terrace for enjoying the better weather. On chillier days, the tavern provides a welcome respite from the elements, with exposed brick, rich wood, and warm lighting all adding to the cozy atmosphere inside.

We rented all three function rooms on the Inn's lower level for our 140 person event; it was cozy, but the space suited us perfectly and there was plenty of room for dancing. The food was delicious and we received several compliments on it. I have been to a lot of weddings, and although I may be biased, I think our food was definitely in the top tier! To the staff's great credit, on the day of my event everything went off flawlessly.

Overall I was thrilled with my experience with TCI, and I would choose them again in a heartbeat for an event venue or a weekend escape. We'll definitely be back to celebrate our anniversary!

“A Super B&B ... Stay Here!”

I've stayed here a dozen times. It is fabulous. If you're looking for a new hotel with chrome and glass, look elsewhere. If you're looking for an historic place with wonderful service, stay here. they are so helpful - even found my daughter's diamond earring after we checked out ... 48 hours later it arrived in Pennsylvania by FedEx.

Folks, it just doesn't get any better than that.

Room Tip: Room 5 is beautiful but very drafty. Stay in the Main House (not the Carriage House) if possible.

“Charming, Quirky, Inconsistent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

I stayed two nights at Three Chimneys, a handsome Colonial property filled with a sense of history and a quirky mix of other things. My room, for instance, had a traditional wooden floor, high ceiling, a real four-poster bed that required a climbing stool to get on to, a full-sized standing knight in metal armor, and framed photographs of 1930s era Hollywood stars along the walls, among other assorted decorations. Weather had turned very cold and the young woman who showed me to my room said that the heat had not been turned on yet for the season, a tale which I found out next day not to be true, but only after a cold experience overnight. A request for a wake up call was taken but not fulfilled. Internet service was inconsistent; front desk staff kept rebooting it without success. The restaurant downstairs is inviting, with brick walls, fireplace, and elements that evoke a real old fashioned New England tavern. Menu selections are fairly broad and service was friendly and attentive. My fish and chips dish was first rate and ample. Breakfast dishes tend to be appealing to the eye but very lightly seasoned, if at all. If looks alone were all that mattered, this place would be tops.

Room Tip: If you sleep in the adjacent Carriage House, there's a wooden bridge and no steps for easy acces...

“A "reason" to visit Durham, NH!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

OK, so Durham, NH seems to be home to as many pizza joints as students... I have never seen so many places to choose pizza in such a small town! If you find yourself looking for a weekend getaway, let me suggest "The 3 Chimneys". Having been a guest twice I can unequivocally recommend Rooms 24 AND 25 and have to imagine the other rooms must be equally nice. I feel comfortable saying that the food is great (and didn't notice pizza anywhere on the menu!) in both the Tavern and the upstairs dining room(s). When you go - don't leave before break"feast" - a reason to wake up with a smile. My husband was totally enamored by the co-eds who greet you at check-in and handle calls and questions at 'the' desk. Enough said! Beautiful property, great food and an interesting cemetery to boot.

“A good place except.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2011

I requested that the bed linens be laundered with non-scented detergent. Didn't happen.
Reeked so much I had a hard time sleeping. When I questioned at the front desk the next morning, I was shown my request printed out and highlited. The very pleasant person explained that she didn't know what happened...why it didn't get to housekeeping...she had done everything she should. At no time was there an apology.
I think this is an issue to be addressed by small inns and B&Bs. As Americans move away from chemicals toward clean, green healthy environments, I think there are many people who do not wish to breathe perfume all night. Anyone else out there agree?
On a positive note....the buffet breakfast was fabulous! The room was New Englandy and it was clean.
