“Lovely stay in a historic bed and breakfast with close proximity to Durham NH.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

The Pines Guest House has beautiful riverside acreage, yet it's also conveniently close to downtown Durham NH. Part of this historic Victorian mansion was built in the 1700's. The interior is decorated with many family antiques and unique collections. The bedrooms and baths are simple, reflecting the reasonable lodging rates. If you overlook a little dust under the beds, you will awake to a delicious and ample continental breakfast buffet with coffee, tea, juice, a variety of cereals, yogurt, fruit and fresh baked goods. Breakfast is served in a pleasant room filled with natural light. During our stay, one of the guests became ill and needed to go to the hospital in the middle of the night. The owner, Mary Margaret was genuine in her concern for this couple and told them they could wait to check out while they took care of what they needed to do medically. I was very impressed with how thoughtful this was. You wouldn't get that type of care and attention in a typical chain hotel. We hope to return to the Pines on our annual trip to Durham next year.

Room Tip: Some rooms have private baths, a few others share a bath.

“Charming and only slightly funky -- like staying in a relative's big old house.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2011

The Pines is an old house that's been in the inkeepers' family for generations. It seems like it's mostly used by longer-term visitors at the University, but it also works for short stays like mine. It's got typical old house issues -- squeaky floors and some drafts, but it's clean and pleasantly furnished. The lighting and heat weren't quite up to modern standards, but the important stuff was OK -- the bed was comfortable, the breakfast satisfying, and the proprietors were friendly and sociable without getting annoying to someone like me who mostly wants a bed for the night, not socializing. Some rooms have shared baths. For the price it's great, comparable to the least expensive generic hotels that are farther out of town.

“Interesting place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2007

This is an interesting place with again, interesting, hosts. There's a good written history in each room. Our group came in late in the afternoon and left the next morning, and my guess is that the atmosphere is probably more suited to long-term stays by persons working with the nearby university who wish to take care of themselves and use the lodgings more as a boarding house than an inn.
Although not terribly objectionable, the house could use some spring/fall cleaning.

  • Liked — Enjoyed talking with the hosts
