A friend and myself had planned an overnight trip and booked a room at the Budget Inn in Berlin NH through a reputable travel website. Needless to say, the accommodations were NOT as advertised. We pulled into the parking lot, immediately skeptical due to the unmanned reception area and the facet that there were baby strollers and buckets for ashtrays outside of various rooms at the property (clearly there were people taking up residency there). Once we went insid to get checked in a man with long scraggly hair, wearing a leather fedora, who had every tooth in his head rotting away, came running in to fetus checked in. We probably should have left before even seeing the room but it was late and so we decided we would give it a chance. After paying and getting the key we moved our car to parking space outside of our room and started unpacking the car. At this point I notice the "concierge" coming our way and he proceeded to unlock the room for us - I've been to many hotels, and never had that happen before - pretty creepy for two women traveling alone. Once inside, with the door locked and deadbolted, our senses were assaulted by the overwhelming amount of airfreshener that was used in attempt to cover up the small of filth. The bed had clearly been used before our arrival, as there were head prints on the pillows. In the bathroom the paint was chipping out of the sink, there was filth on the shower curtain, soap scum galore in the tile and feces splatter in the toilet. In the twenty minutes we spent in the room (searching the Internet for another place to stay) we got multiple flea bites. During that time we heard banging outside of the room. I peeked through the curtain to see aman standing outside of the window. Upon finding a new place to stay, we grabbed our things and headed to the front desk. The man who had checked us in came running from another room to see what we were doing. We told him that we were leaving and explained to him that we were very disappointed, and that his property was not as advertised. Before we even were given the opportunity to demand a refund he informed us that there would not be one. When we asked to get the contact information for the franchise owner he informed us that they were Buddhists and in mourning so we couldn't bother them at this time. We later contacted to locals lice department to inquire as to how we might obtain a refund from them and were told, in a nut shell, that we were lucky that all we lost to them was our room fee and that we made the best decision of our life by not staying there for the night.
