“Stayed there for a convention.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I was lucky enough to snag one of the newly remodeled rooms with a flat screen tv and a bathroom the size of some hotel rooms I've stayed in. Every thing was good. There is a shuttle that takes you to and from the airport. There is also a city bus that stops right outside the door and takes to within two blocks of "the strip" where many casinos are located side by side.

Room Tip: Try to get a remodeled room on the upper floors if possible.

“Remodeling and trying. Very nice all around”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I stayed at Grand Sierra originally for 2 reasons. I got a sweet deal at $35 room (was total $50 after tax and resort fee), and the second was that it was very close to airport. I flew into Reno a day earlier than my companions, and needed to pick them up at airport the next day.

Firstly, the shuttle service was very efficient and close. I told the driver I wanted to get right to the casino and not check in, and he immediately checked my bags with the bellman for me.

The room was adequate. Nothing special, but it was clean. The hallways are dark, and the design is very old-fashioned cowboy themed, and looks weird (but who cares about the hallway).

Some have complained about the resort fee. Since I got such a great deal, it did not bother me, and you really do get value for it. The Health Club is VERY GOOD!! For the service you get here, most are charging at least $5 or $10 (but at GSR, the $10 is NOT optional--most of the other places the fee is optional). The men's and women's locker room both have sauna and steam rooms, and they were excellent. Staff were attentive with towels, and lockboxes in case you had valuables.

Also, this is a great place for kids because of the bowling, movie and driving range all on-site. Pool is only open seasonally.

As for the casino aspect, the staff were excellent. I have gambled all over in Las Vegas, AC, and Delaware casinos, and without a doubt top-to-bottom, the dealers, pit bosses, and supervisors of games were the best I have dealt with. They really strive for excellent customer service. The comp rate system is very good as well. I played 2 days, and received 3 free meals (I am a $5-$10 blackjack and pai gow player, and live poker---so I am not a high roller).

I ate at the Cafe and the Asian restaurant (The Rim), and both were average to above average. Nothing to write about specific, but the food was good.

I would stay here again for sure!!

TIP---This hotel is not close to the best skiing in the area. Mount Rose is the closest skiing, and is probably the worst skiing in the area. I think it is close to several nice golf courses, but I did not golf this trip.

“Great location, great improvments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We have been staying at the Grand Sierra since it became the Grand Sierra, and previously Hilton. The new owners, have thus far made the best improvements. The lobby is looking much more contemporary. We dined at several of the restaurants while we were there, Rim, Briscola, Charlie Palmer, cafe Sierra, and Cantina. The Cantina is a welcome addition, but needs some salsa type music versus 80's rock.

We stayed in the summit rooms, and even those had some improvement, Yes, the furnishings are dark, but we noticed there was new, better lighting. Also there have been some negative comments about customer service at check in, but our experience was very positive. The phone in our room did not work, and someone was there to replace it within 10 minutes of informing them.

Give the new management a chance, it appears better things are in store!

“It'll do”

This is the third hotel/casino we have stayed at in Reno in the last year and this was the least of the three. First of all the price at just over $50.00 per room/per night, I can't complain about that. The room was a good size as was the bathroom, the beds were comfortable, the pillows (2) were too small and there were no spares in the closet. The TV channel selection was abysmal and if you wanted to pay fr one of the new movies you couldn't do it on the TV menu, you had to call the front desk!!
The Ice machine on our floor did not work for the two days we stayed here, overall I believe the hotel to be good value for the money, but I still like a little pazzaz with my hotels, this was a little too Vanilla.

“Great location in Reno”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Staff very helpful, good food at Grill. Lots of parking. Large rooms and nice view, great rates. Starbucks in lobby. Good rates. Hotel is in progress of remodel for some rooms.

Room Tip: Get a room up high with view west side of mountains away from airport.
