The Siena, had new ownership take over sometime in the Spring last year. I have stayed there a few times in the last 6 months. The rooms are good. They aren't special special, but they are cozy. The bed is nice. The air conditioners are a little old and little noisy. They come with in room safe and a refrigerator that's empty, not like some of the other ones that are filled with stuff already to try and sell you stuff. You can actually put something in the refrigerator here, which I wish the others would do the same.
The front desk has the potential to be a little slow if there is a line. It's not totally streamlined and efficient yet, but because of their location slightly off the strip, they aren't as busy as the other comparable hotels. One of the main issues with the hotel is the location if you like to go to the other downtown casinos like Harrah's, El Dorado, and Silver Legacy. When the weather is good, it's just a few blocks long. When it's cold and/or snowing, then a decision has to be made on whether you want to walk or not. The plus side of the location is that it's quieter out there by the Truckee river and the gambling crowd is usually on the laid back side.
In regards to the gambling, they have some of the best blackjack available hands down. They have single deck, pays 3/2 for blackjack and can double down on your first two cards. There is a mix of dealers there, some are very chatty. The supervisors are all quality people. They have one craps table with I think up to 10x odds. There is not usually a lot of action there. Some Paigow and Roulette round up the rest of the table games. They have usual assortment of slots and video poker I presume. i don't play, just see the machines. They also have a small sportsbook and also a self serve kiosk to place your bets if you don't mind doing it on a machine.
At night, they have some sort of musical entertainment in the casino. Quality varies, but usually nice for the middle aged crowd for easy listeners. The volume is kept at a low enough limit you can hear yourself talk.
They have a bunch of restaurants but I've only eaten at the Asian one and the coffee shop. I don't think the Asian one is that good, I've had a couple dishes and wasn't impressed. The coffee shop on the other hand has some really good values and the dishes are pretty hefty. I liked the sandwiches such as the Reuben there. You can eat outside by the Truckee if you like. The service in there has been up and down for me. They try, but some are more efficient than others, but it's all a work in progress.
They have a parking lot, but it is outdoors in the elements. Reno can get very hot, or get very cold and snowy. It's an easy parking job and walk to the casino though. When walking around, stay to the west of the property. The east side on occasion has some down on their luck people.
If I had to stay downtown, I'd probably choose Siena or Harrah's because they have better beds, easier parking, and I think quieter in the hallways than the others. Location is the issue with Siena especially for the elderly if walking to other casinos is important. It's no big deal to the more mobile. The casino is nice for people wanting laid back.
