I had to attend a 4 day conference and waited too long to register. As a result, most of the hotels that I would have preferred to stay at were already booked. But, it's always good to experience other hotels, so I checked in with a positive attitude.
Check In: Smooth and problem-free
Room:
The theme of the hotel is sort-of a medieval castle with knights etc. The room was sparsely furnished and dimly lit. The bedding (from what I could make out from the dim lighting) is a bit worse-for-wear and just kind of sad. The light fixtures were medieval type designs mounted on the wall and gave off very poor light. I had brought some lysol wipes etc and I wiped down every thing I could think of: doorknobs, remote controls, light fixtures. Honestly, there was a layer of dust that was not to be believed. That aside, the sheets etc were clean. Beds are low to the floor and mattresses sag a bit. It was good enough to sleep in but if you're planning on spending any time in your room, you may want to upgrade from the "standard" room. I requested a non-smoking room but it still stank of smoke.
Hotel:
Frankly, I didn't spend too much time at the hotel. Smoking is allowed and the layer of filth everywhere was a total turn-off. For example, the metal knight statues that are here and there, are covered with a layer of dust. There was some kind of motion 3D thing in the bottom floor. It was completely empty, so I tried that and it was kinda fun.
Safety and Security:
After a certain time of the evening (maybe 8-9 pm or so) security stands outside the elevator doors that lead to the hotel rooms. You must show your room card to get into the elevators. I appreciate that but was a bit concerned at the same time. This hotel seemed to have a lot of families staying there.
Pool:
It's pretty sparse compared to the newer hotels but it was a really nice treat to just sit and relax with a cocktail. The water temperature was good and the atmosphere was laid back, with mostly families and polite people just keeping to themselves. The Tropicana Hotel across the street has a very nice curvy pool. I actually packed my backpack and trucked over there for the afternoon one day. I had a long-island ice tea which was served in a plastic cup. After drinking about an inch of it, I literally couldn't get off my chair! It was strong! (Which was fine…but beware!) The Tropicana pool was perfect for me because I really love to swim. It's a small pool compared to the major hotels, but was very tropical and empty.
Food:
Sorry. I didn't eat here at all. But, location-wise, this hotel is near the end of the strip. It's close to New York New York, so I went there for breakfast every day, grabbing a donut and coffee in their cool-looking eating area.
Overall:
It was an ok hotel for just crashing for the night. It's an older hotel, so if you're looking for glitz, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a good bargain on the strip, it fit the bill.
