Staying at the Imperial Palace is definitely a unique experience in modern Las Vegas!
Basically, it's the opposite of the planned mega-resorts. Instead, seems like an on-going DIY project, hotel-style.
Both the front and back entrances are confusing. In the front, you have to walk off the Strip and down a little alley to get to the entrance (which is behind the Rock House Bar). If you are parking a car in the back, you will have to wind your way through an incredible maze of a garage, then hoof a LONG way to the front for check in.
Once you get there though, you will be rewarded with some pretty good customer service.
The IP has a happening casino floor, full of young people and the "dealertainers" are a
kick. Check in via Diamond was super-quick.
I booked the "Luv Tub" room just to see what it was like, and it didn't disappoint. A GIANT tub with steps leading up to it (and over-head lighting) is the main feature of the room. Unfortunately, it's also the only shower in the room, so you have to shower or bathe right in front of the bed. If you're old enough to remember "Love American Style," you'll know what I mean when I tell you that the Luv Tub room could have been one of the sets. It was very large, very clean, but a little worn. There were sliding glass doors that led to a tiny balcony which I enjoyed as it offered a good breeze of fresh air.
This place is a real mish-mash of good and bad.
The good:
-Embers Steak house was a pleasant surprise. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and served hot to table. Prices are actually quite reasonable when you consider that sides are included.
-Casino floor employees are freindly and efficient. Drink service is very good.
-Fat Tuesday's for frozen drinks is conveniently located at the rear of the casino
-The Auto Collection is really impressive
-the casino offers a wide variety of games and is hopping all times of the day or night
The bad:
-The layout is confusing...weird "mystery" elevators going to only a couple of floors seem to be around every corner, yet there are too few main floor elevators. A line literally develops in wait of an "up" elevator.
-The entire property needs a carpet refurb. I think housekeeping does their level best, but you can only bleach stains so much.
-the stairwell (that I used because the elevators were sooooo slow) was downright filthy with years of accumulated grease and dirt. It needs a good steam cleaning.
-Hash House A Go Go is over-rated. The food is just big, not good. Servers are attractive, not efficient.
-Stay away, very far away, from the buffet.
All that said, I kind of love it.
The employees try hard here, and that means a lot to me. Desk personnel, housekeeping, cocktail servers, floor operators and even the workers at the retail outlets are quick to serve, make you feel welcome, and let you know that they appreciate your business. They also seem happy with their jobs, and that makes for a nice atmosphere.
And speaking of atmosphere....the IP has that cheesy, Clark W. Griswold-y feel that I adore! Let the Wynn and the Bellagio have their sedate classiness, I'll take a "dealertainer" in a bad wig belting out Little Richard any day of the week! I can get "classy" at home, but I can't get this anywhere near home.
OK, now that I've thought it over, I'm upping my star rating to 3.
Considering the center-Strip location, low prices, and unique cheese factor, I think that's fair.
