I just got back from a 4-night stay in a Pyramid room at the Luxor. I'd been to the property before for the Bodies exhibit but had seen little else of it.
I work from home and wanted to get out of the house for a while - the Luxor was priced for an impulse trip (sign up for M Life to get a discount on rack rates), so I went there for my "working vacation".
Although my offer included a complimentary upgrade to a Tower room, they did not have any of these available, and I was put in a Pyramid room. These were surprisingly comfortable, and there was a nice big 42" flat screen in the room - a very pleasant surprise (I had to remove the data cable to get access to the HDMI input for my work, though...).
The location is pretty good, with easy access to MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, and New York New York. Aria and Cosmopolitan are a bit of a walk but manageable. Mid-to-north side of the Strip (Bellagio, Mirage, Wynn) is more taxi range than walking range.
The room itself was quite clean, with the exception of a few spots of mold above the shower. Again, pleasantly surprised. I haven't stayed at too many budget places in Las Vegas, but of the ones I have, I'd say that this room was a bit better that the West tower at Circus Circus, which is supposed to be the newest and nicest there.
The one thing that may make this Pyramid room unsuitable for you is that it faces out towards the giant open atrium. It's a pretty incredible view out over the interior of the building, but all the noise makes its way up very easily. The room was also adjoining...which turned out to be a good thing, as I met some cute girls in the room next door! But certainly it allows more noise through. If noise is an issue, I'd suggest a Tower room.
The Luxor itself is quite a large place, with nightclubs, restaurants, and a sprawling casino. The casino is pretty good considering that it caters to low-to-mid range players. The blackjack table rules are not very good, although still better than the Caesar's properties outside the party pit. (The high limit room, however, had good rules, as they all do - but it was only staffed during peak times in the evening. I only played there once.) There are a wide range of modern slot machines. They do a pretty good job of ventilating the place - though I did not play on the weekend and this cannot say if it holds up with the larger crowd. The casino staff were all extremely friendly, and I'll likely go back to play there for that reason.
Since I already have my favorite restaurants in other spots on the Strip, the only place I ate at the Luxor was the buffet. It was not bad, but it's not anything special. I did enjoy the pistachio creme brulee and the pasta, but the fish wasn't to my taste.
I visited the smaller of the two nightclubs at Luxor, the Cathouse, on Thursday night. Music was alright, plenty of space to dance because it wasn't crowded. Not the "happening" scene, which is good because that means they have people giving out free passes (and free drinks before midnight for the females), and tables are cheap. Drinks are expensive, so either be loaded with cash or with booze when you arrive - or have a girl with a wristband hook you up.
Altogether, I was happy with my stay - it's not a high-end place, but it met my needs at a reasonable price.
Room Tip: Tower Rooms are quieter and more modern than Pyramid rooms
