“Luxor, a pyramid scam?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

I always dreamed about staying at the "Las Vegas pyramid" (aka the luxor). I went there for a weekend, and the dream was not a dream at all.
At my arrival, I smelled cigarette smoke in my deteriorated non smoking room. I called the front desk just to hear a "yeah, people smoke all the time".
The next day, because of a mistake made at the cash registry of the restaurant, I had to spend more than 1 1/2 hours discussing with manager after manager to get 50 dlls that were overcharged back. I finally did and the hotel acknowledged their mistake, but not even a sorry was said, and certainly nothing was offered to compensate the problems they created. The bill got so complicated with all their corrections that I still do not know if I was overcharged or not.
Great looking hotel, a little too far from the center of the action (but close enough) but very poorly maintained and managed.

The internet is good, included in the overpriced "resort fee", a scam in most big Las Vegas hotel (if it is a mandatory charge, it should be included as a cost in the price... right?)

Room Tip: Avoid the hotel if non smoking is an important factor. Both of our non smoking room smelled like cig...

“Great place to stay on a budget”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I just got back from a 4-night stay in a Pyramid room at the Luxor. I'd been to the property before for the Bodies exhibit but had seen little else of it.

I work from home and wanted to get out of the house for a while - the Luxor was priced for an impulse trip (sign up for M Life to get a discount on rack rates), so I went there for my "working vacation".

Although my offer included a complimentary upgrade to a Tower room, they did not have any of these available, and I was put in a Pyramid room. These were surprisingly comfortable, and there was a nice big 42" flat screen in the room - a very pleasant surprise (I had to remove the data cable to get access to the HDMI input for my work, though...).

The location is pretty good, with easy access to MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, and New York New York. Aria and Cosmopolitan are a bit of a walk but manageable. Mid-to-north side of the Strip (Bellagio, Mirage, Wynn) is more taxi range than walking range.

The room itself was quite clean, with the exception of a few spots of mold above the shower. Again, pleasantly surprised. I haven't stayed at too many budget places in Las Vegas, but of the ones I have, I'd say that this room was a bit better that the West tower at Circus Circus, which is supposed to be the newest and nicest there.

The one thing that may make this Pyramid room unsuitable for you is that it faces out towards the giant open atrium. It's a pretty incredible view out over the interior of the building, but all the noise makes its way up very easily. The room was also adjoining...which turned out to be a good thing, as I met some cute girls in the room next door! But certainly it allows more noise through. If noise is an issue, I'd suggest a Tower room.

The Luxor itself is quite a large place, with nightclubs, restaurants, and a sprawling casino. The casino is pretty good considering that it caters to low-to-mid range players. The blackjack table rules are not very good, although still better than the Caesar's properties outside the party pit. (The high limit room, however, had good rules, as they all do - but it was only staffed during peak times in the evening. I only played there once.) There are a wide range of modern slot machines. They do a pretty good job of ventilating the place - though I did not play on the weekend and this cannot say if it holds up with the larger crowd. The casino staff were all extremely friendly, and I'll likely go back to play there for that reason.

Since I already have my favorite restaurants in other spots on the Strip, the only place I ate at the Luxor was the buffet. It was not bad, but it's not anything special. I did enjoy the pistachio creme brulee and the pasta, but the fish wasn't to my taste.

I visited the smaller of the two nightclubs at Luxor, the Cathouse, on Thursday night. Music was alright, plenty of space to dance because it wasn't crowded. Not the "happening" scene, which is good because that means they have people giving out free passes (and free drinks before midnight for the females), and tables are cheap. Drinks are expensive, so either be loaded with cash or with booze when you arrive - or have a girl with a wristband hook you up.

Altogether, I was happy with my stay - it's not a high-end place, but it met my needs at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Tower Rooms are quieter and more modern than Pyramid rooms

“Disappointment”

I booked a trip through a 3rd party website, including flight for a Pyramid spa suite several weeks ago, and was looking forward to a relaxing time with my wife.. we get into vegas at 9:30 Friday night, was 10 before we get to the check in line at the luxor. Guy behind the counter seemed like he was in his own world.. gets us checked in and off to the room we go.. get in the room, its not a spa suite. Call the front desk, no answer.. back to the check inline. 30 minutes of waiting.. Only to find out that ALL SPA suites are not in use. I'm like, ok, why wasn't this told on your website, or why wasn't I told since I had a reservation. Was told its due to the fact that we booked through a 3rd party.. So I asked to speak with a manager... Was told the same thing that the rooms were taken "Off Line" and she wouldn't say why. But she would see if a few other MGM resort hotels had rooms,, of course nothing was available by this point.. So the Manager Emily, said she would upgrade us again.. She gave us a 1200 sq foot suite. So, we took it, tired ready to crash and headed to our room.. Got in the room, was SUPPOSE to be non smoking and it smelled like smoke. called the front desk again... they said they had no more rooms and would send up housekeeping... So, the wife and I headed to get some drinks and food.. while gone, the house keeper came in sprayed this NASTY stuff and about killed us with the smell when got back to the room... OK, so sat this point I ask for my money back and we'll go someplace else, Nope, have to go through your 3rd party site. so we stayed the weekend... Jet tub in the suite was not big enough for 2 people.. neither was the shower.. Big nice room, I'll give it that.. Seriously, I would think twice about the Luxor.. read reviews over and over on Trip advisor. some people just post BS and dumb things,, read the real reviews, from people that put thier thoughts into it and what really happen. We managed to salavage the weekend, enjoyed the big room as much as possible, but will not return to luxor, maybe for a show, but thats about it...

Room Tip: call ahead, make sure that your getting what you paid for.

“Discount for a Reason”

This was the first time we stayed at this hotel. While fairly clean, everything is just very basic. The check-in was a very lengthy process, as there were only two receptionists working. We waited almost an hour and we were the fourth in line when we arrived.

About 15 minutes after we had been waiting, one of the receptionists yelled to everyone "there are more receptionists upstairs, if you want to stay in line here, you're going to have to wait a long time". What kind of customer service is that? I went upstairs while my wife stayed and found the lines to be just as long.

After staying at Mandalay Bay for so many years, this felt like a giant leap to a lower grade hotel in both terms of service and amenities. All of that is without even mentioning the night we went back to our room to find a hallway full of police offices and some not-so-good things happening in the room right across the hall!

“Great Hotel for the $$$..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We have stayed at the Luxor before but this is my first time writing a review. We always enjoy staying here because we get great rates for the rooms because we are Mlife members. I recommend you get the Mlife card if you plan on coming back. You get discounts on rooms and they offer promotions for free play also. You can also use the Mlife card at other surrounding casinos. We stayed at the Luxor from 2/09-2/11 and we did enjoy our stay. The only problems I encountered was redeming my $25 of freeplay, it seemed like the women at the cashier was confused on how to give me the $25 worth in chips but I spoke to someone on the floor and they were able to get it fixed for me. Also for some reason there was a hotel employee knocking on our door at 9 am on Friday morning which woke us up, he said he was doing room checks??? Seriously who does room checks at 9 am on Friday morning in Vegas? Anyway, these two things are minor and won't stop me from staying here again. Overall its a good hotel for your dollar, and we like the Cafe inside the Hotel, and its very easy to access other surrounding Casinos like Mandalay Bay and N.Y. N.Y.

Room Tip: Sign up for the Mlife card and get free upgrades.
