We stopped on our way from Las Vegas to California at the Gold Strike Hotel for dinner at about 6 PM on a Thursday evening. I had been by this very ornate "oasis" on I-15 a number of times but never stopped. Not realizing there was still one more big casino/resort complex only one exit down, we decided to stop for supper. What a disappointment!
I cannot testify to the hotel part of this complex, just the food service.
The buffet, while a bargain at $9.95 pp was a pleasant surprise compared to Vegas buffet prices, the quality was awful. This buffet was something out of the 70's, including the tacky decor of the room. There was a "salad bar" station. The dressings were not labeled so it was like guess your best. All the ladles look to have been mixed in the different dressings and no one had thought to monitor the area and clean them and replace with new ladles. The salad fixings were all dried out and hard. The "beef slicing station" offered Turkey and Prime Rib. The woman slicing the Prime Rib sliced a piece about 1" think! Sounds yummy, but it was as dry as the sand outside on the carpet into the casino. The mashed potatoes were just awful. I am not sure why but can only assume it was the quality of the local water. The deserts were also a disappointment as the cakes and pies were dried out as if they had been sitting out all day, which I am sure they were.
The service was almost non existent. I had to ask three times for a coke and when it arrived it tasted nothing like Coke. Not sure if it was a local water issue like with the mashed potatoes or the syrup was not mixed properly. When I made mention of this to the barely english speaking employee she shrugged her shoulders and just smiled.
The employees were all sitting in one of the booths having dinner and chatting among themselves. I don't feel it was proper for employees to be helping themselves to the buffet in front of paying guest and then sitting down in the dining room eating. Apparently the dining room also serves as the employee cafeteria!
My advice is to pass by the Gold Strike Hotel & Casino buffet. Have dinner in Las Vegas or go one more exit towards the Cal line and get a McDonald's hamburger. You will me much happier.
