“This place should not even be open”

To be honest, we only dropped by for a look on the way to the Crystal Bay Club. But still feel compelled to warn our fellow Tripadvisor desciples of this 'tourist trap'. The only explanations for their still getting bookings (and $$) have to be overseas tour groups and buget minded skiers.

Mid day on a Sat - parking lot had 9 cars in it. First clue. The old Cal Neva is gone, Everyone. The wonderful cold evenings of the past in the cozy casino with the big fireplace are now apparently in receivership while new owners / investors are found. Lobby is empty, nothing left. NO CASINO! The good news is that the nearby Crystal Bay Club is a decent casino and is a short hike across the parking lot. Even this is not so hot - The casinos in this small area of Lake Tahoe are on the State Line and have that feel.

Undoubtedly, the property itself will prevail someday. The property and views were secured in the early days of Tahoe, so it was probably someone's first choice of location. But for now, do not stay here with visions of Frank and Marilyn wandering thru the portals of the past. Nothing romantic left. Great flop house for the budget minded, but anyone else would do better elsewhere. Depressing place and they should just close it until they get it sorted out.

Room Tip: Make arrangements for hookups for your RV and stay in the parking lot.

“Stay at a Mom & Pop's Hotel First”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

It sad to see where this once proud hotel has ended up. I stayed there on a recent ski trip. I wasn't expecting much, just wanted a hot tub, a hot shower and a nice bed. Only got one out of three, the hot shower. The casino is gone, all gaming tables removed. How does a casino not money? They hve been replaced with "used" couches and four big screen TV's. The staff didn't care about anything, they had jobs and that is all that seemed to matter.

“The worst experience I've ever had making a hotel reservation”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

I've been in this hotel once before, and the only reason I made another reservation for visiting this hotel is because of its good location, close to several ski resorts. But this time due to my schedule conflict, I had to delay my visit date, so I made a call to this hotel and asked for a date change. What astonished me was: the guy on the phone, who claimed to be the manager, not only refused to change my reservation date, but also very rudely said "NO" to me when I asked whether they would still like to have me as a customer. They had already charged me the cost for one night reservation, and then treated me like I owed some money to them. I trvalled around quite ofen, but never had this kind of terrible experience before, no matter what reason they have, like hotel policy, I can't imagine a hotel manager was doing this, not patiently explaining to a customer and trying to work something out, but just said NO, and hang up when I was talking to him. Just terrible..

So here I have to say NO to them too.

“Used to be great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

The Calneva Resort has alot of history and a beautiful location. We have stayed there before when it was functional and it was GREAT! It is not a spa or a casino (there are maybe a dozen slot machines and one massage therapist) I learned from the locals that it is now owned by the bank and they are looking for buyers, if your interested. If you can get a cheap room, go for it, but don't expect any ammenities.

Room Tip: For a view of Lake Tahoe, choose a room above the 6th floor
