We travel to Great Falls frequently. A co-worker has shared with me about the great experiences with Mariott hotels so when our usual hotel was booked, we thought we'd give the Fairfield a try. I realize the Fairfield is not meant to emulate the higher-end Mariotts but this hotel was a tremendous disappointment. The location is very good; it is within walking distance of the mall and several eateries. Unfortunately, the negative comments far outweigh the benefit of the location. The hotel is shabby; this is clear by the worn, cracked looking exterior, small parking area, and the lack of any sort of welcoming appearance. It looks like a (somewhat) refurbished Super 8 or Motel 6 (in fact, both are nicer in Great Falls). We are quite able to look past a less than perfect appearance, but the individual working at the front desk was unprofessional and unwelcoming. She was clearly more interested in socializing with the young men (who did not appear to be hotel guests) loitering in the lobby. The lobby was grubby, and cluttered with shabby furniture and strewn with various electrical cords. The clerk offered us no information whatsoever about any amenities before sending us to a room we hadn't booked. We came back and she did move us to the correct room but she was surly about (I assure you, we were extremely pleasant and told her we understood if one was not available). There is one ice machine, but it was broken and she could offer no suggestion to the guest who was inquiring where he might purchase some ice. The room was grubby - there was dirty water in the bathtub, lots of dirt/grime on the tile floor in the bathroom and splattered pop on the bathroom door and wall. The upholstery on the sofa cushion is torn and the stuffing was sticking out. The desk and coffee table were sticky with residue. I'm not looking for perfect but I do appreciate seeing evidence that management has some pride in the property. This is clearly not the case with this hotel. I should add that the water pressure in the shower is terrific and the bed is very comfortable (though the sheet is too small and kept popping off the corner of the mattress). The walls are, as other travellers have noted, paper thing so we definitely picked up on some of the noise other reviewers have mentioned.
We have stayed at many properties in Great Falls over the years. Each one of them was nicer than the Fairfield and less expensive. I don't think anything bad will happen to you if you stay here and you'll sleep comfortably in the bed but if you have a choice, try somewhere else. You will be treated like a valued guest instead of a bothersome inconvenience and you'll probably save some money while you're at it.
