“Very nice people! Pretty area! Good value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2010

Our family travelled in to Essex by train. The owners picked us up at the train and...knew we were running late! They serve great food. We needed to get to Kalispell to pick up our car rental and they were so very nice to give us a ride. It's about an hour, one way! In the area, you can check out the Isaac Walton Inn for fun and don't forget to use their hiking/cross country ski trails on the other side of the RR tracks! Go a few miles down the road to "Goat Lick" and take your camera! They have 4 rental units so, you know you'll have some privacy. If your goal is to be "in GNP", you'll probably want to get accommodations in the park after you visit with the Sullens. Thanks for everything! Oh, I almost forgot! They allowed us to use their home based wi-fi. Nice folks!

“No frills, clean, but far from any services.”

This motel is no frills clean facility situated between the East and West entrances to Glacier National Park. Be forewarned this location makes you isolated from the maddening crowd, but makes it at least a 25 mile drive to the nearest gas station, convenience store, etc. We had no cell, internet and spotty GPS service here and throughout the park.
Pros:
1. Roomy, comfortable units with 2 queen beds.
2. Clean and fairly new.
3. Very quiet except for the occasional train whistle.
4. Nice sized fridge and microwave oven.
Cons:
1. Isolated and far from stores.
2. Lacking small lotion, shampoo bottles
3. Resin chairs in the room instead of desk chairs.
4. No internet access.

Excellent visit. Halfway to everything. Food at the hotel is great-homecooking, homemade favorites-good selection! we will be back if ever in the area again. Wish it was closer to TX!

“Very Nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2009

This was one of the best places I have ever stayed. Very clean, very friendly, and what a value! If you choose to stay at the Half Way, get the pancakes. The only thing one could say toward the negative is the location. However, there are some great views on your way to the Glacier entrance, so the drive isn't bad. This is the perfect place for people who are wanting to get away from everything. Nothing fancy, just an awesome nature setting.

“Amazing motel at a decent price!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2009

Submitted by Doug from Utah, stayed mid-July 2009
We were on a motorcycle trip to Glacier National Park. Checking online I found there were only two other places to stay in Essex and they were close to $200/night. The Half Way Motel has only 4 rooms so it fills fast. I was hesitant because of the small size, thinking they probably weren't "real" innkeepers because they didn't have much in the way of a motel to manage. But it's a hidden jewel! The rooms were clean, though one smelled slightly of deodorizer. There is a small front porch to enjoy the tall pines. The river is a 1/4 mile walk (if that far), and across hwy 2 are the railroad tracks. We had a train go by at 2am, and that woke the wife (I slept through the whistle for the crossing which is 500 feet away across Hwy 2). Thats the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5, is the off-chance there might be a late-night freight train that passes by. Amtrak passes about 8:30am and about 5pm but that can vary a lot. To be honest I didnt hear a thing all night.
The motel office/restarant/post office/convenience store is a short walk away (200 ft?) from the rooms. The employees are helpful and friendly, the food is good, and the price was much more tolerable than the other choices. There are TVs in the rooms but there isnt really any local TV station, so your choices are all cable. We were concerned about weather but the cable selection had a westher channel.
Check out the site on Google Earth. The office has the shape of a cross, the rooms are down a driveway and barely visible from the air due to the trees. (The icon is misplaced by a bit.)
