We were on a motorcycle trip to Glacier National Park. Checking online I found there were only two other places to stay in Essex and they were close to $200/night. The Half Way Motel has only 4 rooms so it fills fast. I was hesitant because of the small size, thinking they probably weren't "real" innkeepers because they didn't have much in the way of a motel to manage. But it's a hidden jewel! The rooms were clean, though one smelled slightly of deodorizer. There is a small front porch to enjoy the tall pines. The river is a 1/4 mile walk (if that far), and across hwy 2 are the railroad tracks. We had a train go by at 2am, and that woke the wife (I slept through the whistle for the crossing which is 500 feet away across Hwy 2). Thats the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5, is the off-chance there might be a late-night freight train that passes by. Amtrak passes about 8:30am and about 5pm but that can vary a lot. To be honest I didnt hear a thing all night.
The motel office/restarant/post office/convenience store is a short walk away (200 ft?) from the rooms. The employees are helpful and friendly, the food is good, and the price was much more tolerable than the other choices. There are TVs in the rooms but there isnt really any local TV station, so your choices are all cable. We were concerned about weather but the cable selection had a westher channel.
Check out the site on Google Earth. The office has the shape of a cross, the rooms are down a driveway and barely visible from the air due to the trees. (The icon is misplaced by a bit.)
